If you want to download a .xpi file using Firefox, follow these steps:

  • Click on the file you want to download. This will take you to the download page
  • Wait 5 seconds for the automatic download to kick in and abort the promp to install the file
  • Right click on the text "direct link" and choose "Save Link As…" to download and save the file to your hard disk

You can then install the downloaded file by going to Tools -> Add-ons from within Thunderbird and clicking on the options button next to the add-on search field. There you select "Install Add-on From File…" and locate the downloaded .xpi file.

Starting from version 1.0 ThreadKey is a bootstrapped extension, meaning you don't have to restart Thunderbird or SeaMonkey anymore to activate it…

Starting from version 2.0 ThreadKey is a MailExt Experiment, because it adds unmodified keys, which isn't allowed in a "normal" extension.
