v5.2.0 - Updates In The Background, Lower Costs & Every Device
Row-Bot now keeps itself up to date in the background: it downloads only what changed, prepares the new version next to the one you are using, and switches in seconds when it restarts. Windows installs for your account only, without administrator rights, and every installer is smaller. Conversations cost less and run longer: Row-Bot caches what it can, trims old tool output, and records what each model call uses. Every device you sign in from can now do what the desktop app can, from Google sign-in to backups. Read Upgrade Notes below before upgrading from 5.1 or 5.0.
Installing And Updating
- Updates in the background - about once a day Row-Bot checks for a new release, downloads only what changed (typically a few MB rather than the whole installer), checks every file, and prepares the new version while you keep working. Nothing changes until Row-Bot restarts.
- Restart to update - when the update is ready, the sidebar and the tray say Restart to update, and Row-Bot switches in seconds. If something is running, it can wait until Row-Bot is idle or until you quit; if you ignore it, the update installs the next time you quit. Goals that were working carry on after the restart.
- Your choice - background checks and downloads are on by default. Turn either off in Settings › Updates; first launch says where.
- Safe to go back - if a new version doesn't start, Row-Bot goes back to the previous one by itself and doesn't download that version again unless you ask. Repair in Settings › Updates goes back on request.
- From any of your devices - a phone or another computer signed in to your Row-Bot can see what is downloading and restart into a ready update.
- Windows installs per user - no administrator rights and no wizard pages,
into
%LocalAppData%\Programs\Row-Bot, with a few plain steps on screen, and Row-Bot opens when the installer finishes. Updates no longer ask for administrator approval. - Windows Firewall names Row-Bot - with phone or LAN access on, the program that listens is Row-Bot, signed by Row-Bot, not "Python".
- Smaller downloads - the Windows installer is about 420 MB (731 MB in 5.1), the macOS DMG about 930 MB (1.09 GB) and the Linux tarball about 790 MB (846 MB). Browser Automation uses Chrome or Edge on every system; design exports to PDF, PNG and PowerPoint ask once to install Row-Bot's browser runtime.
- Docker - a container is updated by its host: Settings › Updates says so. Pull a newer image as before.
- What updates contact - GitHub for the release, and, only when libraries changed, the Python Package Index and PyTorch's download server. Every file is checked against a published checksum. No telemetry.
Lower Costs, Longer Conversations
- See what each call uses - every model call records its tokens and cost, and Row-Bot shows them per conversation.
- Caching that sticks - a stable request head, per-conversation cache keys and cached conversation tails on Claude routes mean repeat turns are cheaper and faster; local models stay warm between turns.
- Old tool output steps aside - it is cleared in jumps rather than rewritten every call, and long results stay reachable by handle instead of filling the context.
- Compaction at the right moment - near the limit, after clearing, on a calibrated estimate; small-window models get a leaner first turn without losing any tool.
- Cheaper background work - memory extraction, Dream Cycle, documents, goals and helper agents use the same model at the lowest effort, with caps and structured answers.
Every Signed-In Device
- One owner - every device you sign in from can do what the desktop app can.
- Sign in to Google and X from anywhere, through Row-Bot's public address.
- Backups from any device - download a backup, or restore one, from a phone or another computer.
- Times that read right - remote devices in another timezone show saved times correctly.
- Cloudflare Tunnel - forwarding metadata is accepted for remote access, with docs for setup and forwarding-header errors.
Conversations, Channels And Models
- Channel threads are their own conversations, and
/newworks. - A reply never shows twice, a sent message leaves the composer at once, and a reply cut short by the output limit says so on every route.
- Move a conversation to a local Ollama model from another provider; local models' text tool arguments stay as text.
- ChatGPT sign-in - an expired sign-in says "Sign in to ChatGPT again" with Reconnect instead of "interrupted"; a sign-in finishes even if you close the page; an expired access token renews by itself.
Apps, Documents And Developer
- Apps - "Needs attention" says why (for example, an app's tools changed), and Fix completes; an app that needs attention stays listed in chats with its reason. Abandoned sign-ins recover, and approval cards are readable.
- Gmail and Calendar - parallel reads no longer crash Row-Bot, and their tools use far less memory.
- Documents - one list and one action, honest counts and pauses, and no failure from a deferred index. Memory vectors are stored by meaning with small saves.
- Developer - helpers finish cleanly, read-only helpers can read the code folder, the Git tab shows the agent's pull request, and conversations keep a stable tool set.
Reliability, Security And Privacy
- Four security gaps closed - the shell's safe list,
read_urlserver-side request forgery, keys in child process environments, and channel approval buttons. - Untrusted tool results are fenced, and screen and camera captures ask first; web pages are read from Row-Bot's own browser.
- Plugins - worker plugins get an isolated environment in packaged builds.
- Recovery restore brings back the usage ledger.
- Replies on a Mac - on a Mac installed from the DMG, settings could not be saved, so every reply stopped with "The response was interrupted". Both work now.
Upgrade Notes
- From 5.1 or 5.0, once with the full installer - the old version updates to 5.2 the way it always has. After that, updates download in the background.
- Row-Bot closes while 5.2 installs - after the download, 5.0 and 5.1 show "Disconnected" and close. That's expected: the installer's window then says it is updating Row-Bot, and Row-Bot opens again by itself when it finishes.
- Choosing Beta in 5.1 - if 5.1 says the settings changed somewhere else when you pick the Beta channel, reload and pick Beta again.
- Windows - 5.2 moves Row-Bot from Program Files to your account and asks once for administrator approval to remove the old copy. If you decline, Row-Bot 5.2 installs and opens anyway, and Settings › Updates offers Remove the old Row-Bot later, in the desktop app on that computer.
- macOS - Row-Bot now needs macOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer on Apple silicon. When the old version opens the new DMG, drag Row-Bot to Applications one last time.
- Linux - nothing to do; 5.1 installs 5.2 by itself. To run Row-Bot under
systemd, use
Restart=always(orRestartForceExitStatus=75), so it comes back after restarting to update. - Your data stays - conversations, memory, settings and sign-ins carry over. Repair can go back to an earlier 5.2 version, not to 5.1.
Known Issues
- Windows Firewall may ask again after an update - with phone or LAN access on, Windows can ask once more after each update, because each version runs from its own folder. Allow it; a later 5.2 release keeps one fixed path.
