README!! ===== This CD image contains the prerequisite software for running the Simple MSSQL network monitor. It is HIGHLY recommended you run this on Windows NT 4.0. And it is further recommend to run this on a NEW machine. There is nothing wrong with a virtual machine, but part of how this works is that it will overwrite the hosts & services files found in the NT system directory. This could wreck havoc on 2000 and newer machines. Another snag is that this whole thing hinges on the SQL Agent in SQL server. As such it will NOT function correctly, with the SQL Express stuff that cannot run scheduled tasks. MSDE 1.0 (which is a cutdown SQL Server 7) will not install on 2003, or XP and beyond. I do suppose if you own a real copy of SQL 2000 or 2004 you could use those, but Im trying to do this on the cheap. Id really only support NT 4.0, either workstation or server for this setup. I havent tried Terminal Server but I suspect it would work. Install order ===== On this CD simply install stuff in this order, and youll be good to go: Service Pack 6a for Windows NT 4.0 Nt4sp6\sp6i386.exe These should be somewhat straight forward to install. Internet Explorer 6 sp 1 Ie6-sp1\ie6setup.exe These should be somewhat straight forward to install. Option Pack (*This is only for NT 4.0 SERVER, and if you want the pc to act as its own mail relay) Opack\setup.exe The typical configuration will install the SMTP server. Remember to allow 127.0.0.1 to relay! MSDE 1.0 Msde\setupMSDE.exe Ive tried to wrap the notoriously terse MSDE installer into something thatll at lest give you a hint to its status. If you install this onto a clean machine, itll run just fine. SQL Server 7.0 service pack 4 Sql7sp4\sql70sp4.exe *Note that this will only deploy the service pack, you still have to run it. While you are running it, make sure you leave the security as MIXED. You can set an SA password if you so wish, just remember what it is. Although the SA isnt required to do the install, or the operation, all of the scripts & programs rely on the embedded SQL user ids.
