  • I already have an excellent backup utility for drives and partitions, but I have found it hard to find an adequate backup utility for files and folders. Areca requires JAVA, Cobian just doesn't work on my XP machine, Personal Backup is too complicated and does provide not Volume Shadow Copy under XP, FBackup provides no differential and incremental backups in the free version, and SA Backup provides incremental but not differential backups. Enterprise level backup solutions like Bacula are overkill for someone like me. So far Simple Backup has been only satisfactory means I have found to backup the contents of a USB flash memory to an internal or external hard drive. The main shortcoming of Simple Backup is that it is too simple. Possible improvements might include compression, password protection, Volume Shadow Copy and incremental backups, although I realize that that it may not be possible to provide differential backups to a compressed backup. Also, I prefer programs that do not require .NET which I would rather not have on my Windows partition.
