7-Zip is a file archiver with a high compression ratio. 7-Zip works in Windows 11 / 10 / 8 / 7 / Vista / XP / 2022 / 2019 / 2016 / 2012 / 2008 / 2003 / 2000.
You can use 7-Zip on any computer, including a computer in a commercial organization. You don't need to register or pay for 7-Zip. And there is command line version for Linux and macOS. Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license. The unRAR code is under a mixed license with GNU LGPL + unRAR restrictions. Check the license for details.

We would have given 7-ZIP 5 stars, except that it sets the Windows archive bit even on archive files whose content hasn’t changed. This is a huge design flaw, in our opinion, and causes our daily Web site updates to transfer an extraneous 9 GB of unchanged files each year. We have requested multiple times that this be fixed.

First use and it has absolutely destroyed my 4tb nas hard drive @ a cost of £150. I'm livid!!!!!! Should have known better than to use free stuff like this no matter how well intentioned it is, nothing is for free and this just proves it. :-(

I downloaded 7za910.zip from this page and ran it against VirusTotal dot com and Bkav (1 of the 65 Major Anti Virus Checkers) found a malware: W32.eHeur.Malware09. Who knows, could be a False Positive. I downloaded 7z version 18 from Igor's official website and ran it against VirusTotal and I also unzipped it and ran all its containing exe's thru VT and it was clean. Otherwise I think 7zip is a great tool.

7-zip was very highly recommended to me, so I downloaded it. When I went to install it, the first thing I saw was a message that the publisher is unverified and did I want to proceed? well, these days if there is any question about security, you don't want to install something that gives you a warning like that. So I deleted it. Too bad. My friend said it is a great product and he does not know why it is giving that warning message. Feedback would be app[reciated. Please let me know if this will change soon.
