I would recommend it, telnet is for TCP testing and sendudp is for UDP testing, no need to reinvent the wheel just use sendudp.

I am sorry that the author has spent a plenty of time for reinventing the wheel. There is more powerful console tool which does the same and much more -- NetCat. It could be used for the same purpose this way:
$ echo -n <message> | nc -uo <host> <port>
Moreover, it can listen too:
$ while true; do nc -lou <listen_port> < /dev/null; echo; done
