Read more: everything in 3.0.0 ### 🆕 New #### 🔑 Licensing - **The installer now asks how you will use SageThumbs 2K: personal (free) or business.** Personal, non-commercial use stays free with every feature, exactly as before. Business and other commercial use requires a commercial licence under the PolyForm Noncommercial license the app has always shipped with; the installer now says so plainly instead of leaving it in the licence text nobody reads. Your answer is remembered across updates, and changing it means reinstalling. Nothing about thumbnails, previews, or any feature changes either way. - **A Licence page in Settings for redeeming a business seat key, with a background check that keeps it current.** Enter the seat key you were given (`esk_...`) under Settings ▸ Licence and the copy is on record as licensed; personal use needs nothing and stays exactly as it was. A business copy has every feature from the moment it's installed, key or not, it just reminds you to add one: a notice when you launch it, and a strip on the Settings page that stays until you do. The check that keeps a redeemed key valid rides the background check the update feature already runs, at most once every six hours, and tolerates about a week offline before it starts reminding again. - **The sync and licence status lines are more honest about what is actually happening.** Settings ▸ Data & Backup now shows a plain "Offline" state when a sync attempt could not reach the server at all, instead of describing it the same way as a save that reached the server and was rejected. Disconnecting an account now tells you if the copy stored in your account could not be deleted, rather than always saying it was. On the Licence page, a machine running on an offline certificate now gets an early warning as that certificate's own expiry approaches, separate from the ordinary "Licensed" line. #### 📦 Installer and updates - **Downloaded updates are now checked for a valid signature before they run.** The one-click updater already verified a downloaded installer's size and checksum; it now also confirms the installer was signed by us before installing it, and refuses to run one that wasn't. - **After SageThumbs updates itself, a notification offers to refresh your thumbnails right away.** Previously you'd only see the new thumbnails once Explorer's cache naturally expired; a click on the notification now refreshes them immediately. #### 🖼️ Thumbnails - **HDR PNGs render correctly.** A PNG carrying the `cICP` colour chunk with a PQ or HLG transfer (what recent HDR tools write) is now converted to linear light and tone-mapped the way EXR and Radiance files already are, instead of being shown as a washed-out picture with the wrong curve. Ordinary PNGs are untouched. - **The format list now explains HOW each file type's thumbnail is made, not just that it's supported.** The Settings file-types list has a new "How" column (full decode, embedded preview, cover art, cover or first page, video frame, or contents of the archive), the `st2k formats --json` output carries the same detail for scripts and the website, and `st2k doctor` reports which formats depend on an optional Windows codec and whether it's actually installed on your machine. #### 👁️ Quick preview - **Save the video frame you are looking at.** The Quick preview's Save button now works on a video and writes the frame at the current position, and a right-click on a video-only selection offers "Save frame as image" instead of the picture verbs that never applied to it. - **A hex view for files nothing can render.** An unknown binary shows a classic hex dump instead of a bare info card, truncated with a note rather than trying to read the whole file. - **Folders show their total size** in the Quick preview, and say "more than" instead of a wrong number when the folder is too large or too deep to finish counting quickly. - **A per-extension Quick preview blocklist** on the Quick preview settings page: list the extensions you never want previewed. Empty by default, and separate from the File types page. - **Pressing Space on something that is not a file now says so.** Recycle Bin, This PC and other virtual items used to do nothing at all. - **Print from the Quick preview.** A print button on the caption toolbar (or **Ctrl+P**) sends the image, the PDF page or the animation frame you are looking at to the standard Windows print dialog, fitted to the page. - **A Save button in the preview window.** Viewing a PDF page or an animated image and want to keep just that page or frame? A new Save button (and the Ctrl+S shortcut) saves the page or frame you're currently looking at as a PNG image. - **Batch, PowerShell, and Perl script files are now colour-highlighted in the text preview.** Previewing a `.bat`, `.ps1`, or Perl script now shows proper syntax colouring, including files that only identify their type through a `#!` line at the top rather than their extension. #### ♿ Accessibility - **Screen readers can use the Settings window.** Every category in the left-hand rail now reports its name and which one is selected, so Narrator and NVDA announce where you are. - **The Quick preview's toolbars are keyboard-reachable.** Tab moves into the caption toolbar and the video controls, arrows move along them, Enter or Space presses, Escape returns to the content; the focused button shows a ring. #### 🧰 Right-click menu - **Rename with pattern.** A new entry in the Rename submenu opens a small dialog: type a pattern such as `{name}_{n:3}` (placeholders for the name, extension, a padded counter, the capture date and the pixel size), optionally find and replace text, watch the live preview, and rename the selection in one go. Nothing is ever overwritten. - **Set as lock screen**, beside "Set as wallpaper", for any format SageThumbs can decode. - **Watermark in the Convert dialog.** Tick "Watermark", choose an image, and pick a corner (or the centre), a size as a percentage of the picture and an opacity; it is applied after the resize and before the encode, for every output format including the ImageMagick ones. - **Three more wallpaper placements: Fill, Fit and Span**, alongside the existing Stretch, Tile and Center, in the "Set as wallpaper" menu. - **Sort by date taken.** A new "Sort into folders ▸ By date taken" verb moves each selected image into a `YYYY-MM-DD` folder named from its EXIF capture date; a file with no capture date is left where it is. - **Copy as data URI.** A new "Copy as data URI" verb base64-encodes the selected image and copies a `data:<mime>;base64,...` URI to the clipboard as text, ready to paste into CSS, HTML or JSON. #### ⌨️ Command line and MCP - **`st2k upload <file>`** uploads through the same hosts the screenshot editor uses and prints the URL (`--copy` also puts it on the clipboard). - **Retry only the files that failed, from the command line or from the failure report.** After a batch that only partly succeeded, `st2k batch --retry-from report.json` re-runs exactly the files a saved `--json` report lists as failed, with whatever options you give it, and reports the retry the same way so a second retry can follow on. In the app, the Convert dialog's failure report now has a "Retry failed" button that runs those same files again with the same settings and shows the result the same way. - **The command line and MCP tools gained a `cbz` command, folder recursion, and richer batch info.** You can now combine a folder of images straight into a comic-book archive (`.cbz`) from the command line or through the MCP tool used by AI assistants and scripts, matching the existing PDF command. Batch jobs can now recurse into subfolders with a `--recurse` flag, and a new batch "info" option returns details for every file in one call, including proper tag data (artist, album, title, and more) for audio files. - **New `--export-settings <file>` / `--import-settings <file>` command-line flags for scripted deployment.** Save or apply the entire settings tree to a JSON file straight from the command line, no window needed, the same round trip Settings ▸ Data & Backup's Export and Import Settings buttons already do. Handy for rolling one configuration out to a fleet of installs. #### 📸 Screenshots - **Ctrl+U now triggers "Upload & copy" in the screenshot overlay.** Uploading a screenshot and copying its link no longer requires reaching for the mouse. - **The eyedropper tool now tells you when a colour reading is approximate.** Picking a colour from an HDR display now shows a small note explaining that the value is sampled from the tone-mapped (SDR) picture, since a true HDR value can't be read this way. #### 🛡️ Robustness - **A tester's checklist for installed, portable, admin and multi-user setups ships with the source.** A documented scenario matrix and a one-command script now cover storage mode (installed or portable), running as standard or as an administrator, who installs versus who runs the app, and multiple sessions on the same machine (including Remote Desktop), so that ground can be checked the same way every time instead of being re-worked out from scratch. - **The built-in diagnostics tool can now spot when another program has taken over your thumbnails, and export its findings as a file you can share.** Running SageThumbs 2K's doctor/diagnostics check now detects when a different program's icon handler has silently replaced SageThumbs' own for a file type, and shows which handler took over. Its report can also be exported as a single zip file, including the relevant tail of the error log, handy when asking for help. #### 🌐 Community - **A "Join our Discord" button on the sign-in banner.** Questions, ideas, or a hello: the LunarWerx Discord is where we are. The button opens a LunarWerx page that forwards to the current invite, so the link in the app never goes stale. --- ### 🔁 Changed - **Importing a settings file now fully replaces your settings instead of merging with them.** Previously, an imported settings file only added or updated values, leaving anything not present in the file untouched, so an old setting could survive an import that was meant to reset it. Importing now removes anything the imported file doesn't include, matching what most people expect "import" to do. Your sign-in stays intact either way. - **Portable copies of SageThumbs 2K keep more of what they touch inside their own folder.** A portable copy's sign-in details, its custom screenshot-upload host list, its HTML-preview browser data, and its update-check cache now all live beside the portable copy instead of leaking into the host PC's own storage. Signing in on a portable copy also now shows a reminder that anyone using that same copy can see your synced settings, and a portable copy now consistently refuses to install an update on its own, as intended. - **Zooming the preview window with the keyboard now matches the mouse wheel.** Ctrl+= and Ctrl+- now zoom in one step at a time, centred on the image, the same way the mouse wheel does, and can now reach true 100% even in a small window showing a very large image, previously only double-clicking could get you there. --- ### 🩹 Fixed #### 📦 Installer and updates - **The installer no longer adds a certificate to your PC.** The Windows 11 context-menu package is now signed with the same publisher certificate as everything else, so nothing has to be trusted into the machine's certificate store any more, and upgrading from 2.5 removes the self-signed certificate the old installer put there. - **Uninstalling, or switching a file type off, no longer wipes out Details-pane and tooltip layouts you customised yourself.** When SageThumbs 2K provides a file type's properties, it also writes the lists that tell Explorer which properties to show in the hover tooltip, the Details pane and tab, and the column picker. Removing it used to delete all four of those lists outright, even where you or another program had since changed one. It now removes only the lists it wrote itself (including the ones written by much older versions of SageThumbs 2K) and leaves anything that was changed or added afterwards exactly as it was. - **The installer and repair tool now tell you when thumbnail registration genuinely failed.** Previously a registration failure during install or repair could be reported as a success; it's now surfaced properly so you know to try again or ask for help. - **Installing, first-run setup, and uninstalling all work more thoroughly.** A fresh install now properly sets up the right-click folder-icon menu entry and format-overlay icons for your account right away, instead of only after you'd opened Settings once; choosing a corner-mark style during first-run setup also now takes effect immediately rather than waiting for something else to trigger a refresh. Uninstalling now removes those same pieces, plus the screenshot tool's start-at-logon entry, across every account on the PC instead of sometimes leaving them behind. A rare timing issue that could leave thumbnails broken right after an update now heals itself automatically the next time you sign in, and says so, and installing to a folder whose path contains an apostrophe no longer breaks the modern right-click menu setup step. - **The modern Windows 11 context menu now registers for the account actually using the PC, even when a different administrator's credentials were used to approve the install.** Installing as a standard user and supplying another admin's password at the prompt used to register the modern menu for that admin's own account instead of yours. Uninstalling now removes it regardless of which account is signed in, instead of only for whoever happened to answer the prompt. Uninstalling also no longer removes a certificate someone else trusted just because it shares the same name; it removes only the exact one this installer added, and an upgrade from an older version now correctly picks up that it was the one that trusted it in the first place. #### 🖼️ Thumbnails - **The program's icon is back in the corner of Photoshop, Illustrator and other editor files.** With the corner set to "Windows' file-type icon", Explorer never draws one on a type it treats as a photo, which is exactly the set of editor formats SageThumbs exists for, and it draws nothing at all when a program update leaves the file type pointing at last year's registration. SageThumbs now tells Windows which icon to draw in both cases, so a folder of PSD and JPEG covers is tellable apart again. It also restores the corner icon on camera RAW files, which installing SageThumbs used to remove as a side effect of registering them. The rule is deliberately narrow: it never adds an icon Windows would not have drawn before SageThumbs was installed, it leaves a program that turns its own icon off alone, and `st2k doctor` names both cases plus any icon that has since moved. - **AVIF thumbnails have their colours back.** A Windows codec update in early September changed how it reads the colour information inside an AVIF, and ordinary AVIF files started coming out with shifted colours: skies and skin visibly off, greys unaffected. SageThumbs now checks what the codec on your machine actually does, using a handful of tiny reference images built into the app, and works around it wherever it is wrong. The check repeats itself on every machine and after every codec update, so this cannot come back quietly the next time Windows changes. - **Black-and-white AVIF images are no longer washed out.** A correction meant for colour files was being applied to them as well. - **A file that fails to thumbnail is no longer re-decoded at full cost on every Explorer redraw.** The thumbnail host remembers the failure for two minutes (keyed on the file's name, size and modified time, so an edited file is retried at once). - **Canon CRW thumbnails are fast again.** Older Canon RAW files in the `.crw` format (as opposed to the newer `.cr2`/`.cr3`) were not recognised as a camera RAW container, so their thumbnail always fell back to the slow full demosaic path instead of using the fast preview already embedded in the file. - **Thumbnails and previews decode a little faster, and some special image types are more accurate.** A JPEG carrying a large embedded colour profile now shows the correct colours in its thumbnail and preview, instead of an approximation. DDS texture files, including 3D "volume" textures, thumbnail more accurately and pre-size correctly for the right-click menu preview instead of decoding at full size first. Downsizing an extremely large image, or compositing a transparent image over the checkerboard background, can no longer silently overflow and produce a corrupted thumbnail. - **Matroska (.mkv/.webm) video thumbnails find a real keyframe more often.** Some Matroska files previously produced a black or blank thumbnail because the frame SageThumbs tried first wasn't actually a keyframe; it now checks and falls back to a real one, including for a less common file structure where the last section doesn't declare its own size up front. - **A video you rotated without re-encoding now thumbnails the right way up.** Turning a clip with `ffmpeg -display_rotation 90 -i in.mp4 -c copy out.mp4` is instant and keeps the original quality, because it writes a note in the file rather than touching a single pixel. Windows' own thumbnails and practically every player honour that note; SageThumbs did not, so a rotated clip looked identical to the original in Explorer and you had to open videos one at a time to tell which way up they were. It now reads the note and turns the picture to match. Both the MP4 family (`.mp4`, `.mov`, `.m4v`, `.3gp`) and Matroska (`.mkv`, `.webm`), which record it in two different ways. Upright videos are unaffected and cost nothing extra. (issue [#32]) - **Photoshop files stayed blurry in the Explorer preview pane, however long you waited.** A `.psd` carries a small ready-made thumbnail near the front of the file, usually about 160 pixels, whatever the size of the artwork, and SageThumbs was answering every request with it, including the preview pane's, which asks for something nearer 2048. You got a soft, undersized picture that never improved. It now uses that built-in thumbnail only when it is genuinely big enough for the size being asked for, and renders the real full-resolution artwork when it is not. Explorer's ordinary icon views are unchanged and exactly as fast as before, because for those the built-in thumbnail really is big enough; the large views take a moment the first time and are then cached like any other thumbnail. The Space-bar Quick preview, which was already showing the full picture, is untouched. (issue [#33]) #### 👁️ Quick preview - **Quick preview loading is now held to a stated time budget, and slow or stuck work is tracked instead of running unseen.** Each stage of opening a file has a time budget written down in the code; a stage that runs past it, and any load that gets abandoned (for example by switching to a different file, or closing the window while a slow network share or removable drive is still being read), is now logged with the current count of abandoned work against its cap, and a decode that hangs is counted against that same cap instead of being invisible to it. Closing the window while something is still loading now cancels that load's own bookkeeping right away. - **The preview window's Previous and Next buttons no longer skip over mail files and internet shortcuts.** Stepping through a folder now lands on `.eml` and `.msg` messages, and on `.url` and `.webloc` shortcuts where the optional web-preview feature is built in, instead of jumping past them to the next image. - **Large text file previews no longer occasionally show in the wrong character encoding.** If the first chunk SageThumbs read happened to end in the middle of a multi-byte character, it could misjudge the whole file's encoding; that edge case is now handled correctly. - **The preview window is more reliable when you're moving quickly or it's had trouble.** Its Open button no longer closes the preview if the app it tried to hand the file to actually failed to launch. Pressing Ctrl+C to copy the currently previewed image, then switching files right away, no longer occasionally copies the previous file's picture instead of the one you just switched to. And commanding the preview window to open, close, or toggle from the tray icon or a hotkey now times out instead of hanging the whole app if the window has stopped responding. - **Document previews handle very large or unusual content more gracefully, and Find jumps straight to a distant match.** A table with tens of thousands of rows, an extreme number of columns, or a link followed by an unusual run of punctuation could previously make a document preview slow to the point of appearing frozen; each is now capped, with a small note explaining what was left out. Using Find to jump to a match far down a Markdown document now jumps straight there instead of slowly stepping down the page. Mail previews also now decode HTML entities correctly and cap a very long attachment list with a note about how many more there are. - **The Space-bar Quick preview now sharpens very large Photoshop files too.** Opening a PSD or PSB over about 256 MB in the Quick preview showed Photoshop's small built-in thumbnail and never replaced it with the real picture, with nothing in the log to say why: the second pass that fetches the full composite was reading the file through the limit meant for Explorer thumbnails, and the preview's own worker was missing the setup the Windows imaging codecs need, so its fast path for oversized files silently failed. Both are fixed, and when a composite genuinely cannot be produced the verbose log now says which step stopped and why. - **Opening the Quick preview on a file from a slow or unresponsive network share or removable drive no longer freezes the preview window before it can even appear.** The window now shows right away with its usual loading spinner while the file is read in the background, so it can still be closed or switched to another file immediately; if you flip through several files in a row, only the newest one you selected is ever shown, even if an older, slower read finishes later. #### 🎨 Convert & editing - **Converting to AVIF, JPEG XL and the other ImageMagick-encoded formats now keeps the picture's EXIF, XMP and colour profile**, the same way Resize and Rotate already did. - **Rotating or flipping a JPEG that already had a rotation tag now turns out correctly.** Applying a rotate or flip to a photo that a camera or another app had already marked as rotated could previously end up rotated the wrong way; the two are now combined correctly. - **Editing a "multi-picture" JPEG from a dual-camera or 3D-photo app no longer corrupts the second picture inside it.** Stripping metadata or otherwise editing such a file used to risk damaging the second embedded image; SageThumbs now recognises this format and avoids it. - **Converting a HEIC or AVIF photo now carries its camera and location metadata across, and compressing to a target file size is more consistent across formats.** Converting from HEIC or AVIF previously dropped EXIF details (like camera model) and XMP data (like GPS location) entirely; both are now preserved, the same way they already were for other source formats. Compressing an image to a specific file size used to go through a more limited decoding path than the rest of SageThumbs's editing tools, which could make it fail on formats everything else handles fine; it now uses the same path as everything else. - **Converting or saving to WebP now carries its camera and location metadata across too.** WebP previously dropped EXIF details (like camera model), XMP data (like GPS location) and the embedded colour profile when it was the output format; all three are now preserved, the same way they already were for JPEG and PNG. - **Saving an edited file back to itself now preserves its other attributes.** Rotating, resizing, or converting a file in place could previously lose attributes like Hidden, alternate NTFS data streams, or permissions; those now survive the save. A save that fails partway through also no longer leaves a stray temporary file behind. - **JPEG quality can no longer be saved as 0.** A quality setting of 0 produced a nearly blank image; quality is now kept between 1 and 100 wherever it can be set, whether from Settings, the command line, or a batch conversion. - **Converting very large Photoshop files did nothing at all.** Converting a folder of PSDs quietly skipped every file over about 270 MB, no error, no output, just a smaller number in the "converted N of M" summary. Those files were being turned away by a size limit meant for something else entirely: a safety budget for files that arrive unasked-for, such as whatever folder Explorer happens to be drawing thumbnails of. A file you picked and asked to convert is not that, and it now gets a limit sized for the job, comfortably past the 2 GB ceiling Photoshop's own `.psd` format has. The "Max file size (MB)" setting was never involved, which is why changing it did not help. (issue [#34]) - **A conversion that fails now says which files it was.** The summary at the end of a batch reported how many succeeded and nothing else, so a run that skipped nine files out of sixty gave you no way to tell which nine. It now names them. #### 🧰 Right-click menu - **The Windows 11 right-click menu no longer reads a large selection's file names on Explorer's own thread.** That walk happened before the action's worker even started; the worker does it now, so a thousand-file selection costs Explorer only the click. - **Sorting images into folders by size no longer deletes a folder someone else just made.** "Sort into folders by image size" used to check whether a `WIDTHxHEIGHT` folder existed and create it a moment later; if another program (or another SageThumbs action) created that same folder in between and this run's own move then failed, it removed that other folder as if it were its own leftover junk. Creating the folder is now a single atomic step, so only a folder this run actually created can ever be removed on a failed move, and only while still empty. - **The right-click menu opens faster and no longer slowly leaks memory the longer Explorer stays open.** Building the menu used to re-check the same file information and re-read the same settings on every single right-click; it's now reused instead, which is especially noticeable on network drives, videos, and RAW photos. A couple of small drawing resources that used to leak a little on every menu open are now properly freed, and, for anyone running a Start-menu or Explorer skin such as StartAllBack, DarkMagic, or ExplorerPatcher on an ARM64 PC, the menu's logo now recognises those tools correctly there too. - **Several batch tools now show progress and correctly report when part of the job didn't finish.** The "Files to Folder" and "Tags to Folder" tools used to freeze their dialog for the whole batch; both now show a progress bar and stay responsive while working. The Convert dialog now skips OneDrive "cloud-only" files that haven't actually downloaded, and tells you how many it skipped. Moving files into a folder, combining images into a PDF or CBZ, launching an external app on a selection, and converting to several preset sizes at once could all previously report success even when part of the job silently failed; each of these now tells you when that happens. #### 📄 Documents & archives - **Archive listings no longer show garbled names for Japanese or DOS-era zips, rars and tars.** Entry names that are not UTF-8 now fall back to Shift-JIS and then to the DOS code page, the way the archivers that wrote them meant. - **A short Windows-1252 text file such as one containing "Straße" no longer opens as a stray Chinese reading.** The legacy-encoding scorer now prefers the system code page on short buffers when the alternative is a single accidental double-byte match. - **Cover art from archives, comics, and ebooks is more reliable.** APK/XAPK/APKM Android package files no longer mistake an unrelated, similarly-named entry for the real package; 7-Zip solid archives now prefer a file actually named "cover" when choosing one; and a ZIP file whose declared size doesn't match its real contents can no longer make cover-art extraction spend far more effort than it should. An EPUB book cover written with single quotes in its metadata now shows correctly too, previously it depended on which program made the file. - **A malformed or oversized entry inside a compressed image or ZIP-packaged file could quietly come back as an incomplete picture instead of being refused.** An SVG or EMZ image's gzip data, a Paint Shop Pro file's zlib data, and a compressed entry inside any ZIP-based file such as an EPUB, an Office document, an APK, or a Krita/OpenRaster/Fusion 360/3MF/CorelDRAW project preview could all decompress past an internal size limit and still be accepted as a complete, valid read. Such an entry is now refused outright and falls back to the default icon or next tier, the same way a truncated ZIP entry already does. #### 🎛️ Settings - **Signing in to Settings Sync no longer looks like it failed when only the first cloud sync did.** Signing in saves your account right away, but if the very first sync to the cloud couldn't finish, the status line and the "Stop syncing" button used to say you were fully synced while a message box, from that same sign-in, said it had failed. That case now shows its own "first sync didn't finish" status with a "Retry sync" button that tries again using the sign-in you already have, no second browser window needed. Disconnecting also now says plainly that removing the copy stored in your account is a best-effort request, not a promise it always succeeds. - **Settings now catches it when you assign the same hotkey to two different screenshot actions.** Give the capture hotkey, the quick-save hotkey, or the custom action the same key combination and Settings now tells you which two collide and refuses to save until you pick a different combination for one of them, instead of silently saving both and leaving one of them unreachable. - **Settings now tells you when a save actually fails to write to the registry.** Previously, if a setting couldn't be saved (for example a permissions problem or a locked key), the dialog closed as though it had worked, with no error and nothing in the log. It now shows a message naming what failed to save and where. #### 💾 Data & sync - **Importing an empty or unusable settings file no longer wipes your settings first.** Import used to clear the existing configuration and only then discover the file carried nothing, reporting "No settings were found" over settings that were already gone. A file with nothing usable in it is now refused before anything is touched, and on a portable copy a real import replaces the settings file in one step instead of value by value. - **A failed settings sync retried forever.** After one push to the cloud failed, the "retry later" marker could never be cleared, so every later Settings open pushed again before pulling. It clears on success now, and a portable copy keeps the marker beside its own settings instead of in the host PC's registry. - **Your settings are more resistant to corruption and to being lost on export/import.** If the settings file becomes briefly unreadable (for example, a security tool has it locked for a moment), SageThumbs no longer overwrites it with a blank file, wiping everything you'd configured. A value that could have corrupted the settings file the next time it was read is now refused instead of being written. Exporting and re-importing your settings also no longer loses your sign-in, which could previously happen due to a capitalisation mismatch in an internal key. - **Exporting or importing settings can no longer fail outright on a network share or a cloud-sync folder like OneDrive.** Some such destinations report the write itself as successful but refuse the extra step of flushing it fully to disk. SageThumbs 2K now treats that flush as best-effort instead of required, so Settings ▸ Data & Backup's Export and Import, and the `--export-settings`/`--import-settings` command-line flags, still complete on those destinations instead of reporting a failure. - **Exporting settings can no longer destroy your previous backup if the export fails partway through.** Overwriting an existing settings backup and then hitting a disk-full, removed-drive, or permissions error used to leave the old backup truncated even though SageThumbs reported the export as failed. The export is now written safely to a temporary file first and only swapped in once it's complete, so a failed export leaves your previous backup exactly as it was. #### 🔒 Privacy & security - **A portable copy no longer writes its upload-hosts config into the host PC's profile;** it lives beside the portable settings file like everything else. - **Settings backups from a portable copy no longer carry your sign-in.** The exported file included the (encrypted) sign-in token, licence certificate and account name, and importing someone else's backup replaced or removed the current sign-in. Those are left out of exports and left alone by imports, on portable and installed copies alike. - **A privacy gap in the Markdown and HTML preview is closed, and a referenced image can no longer point outside the document's own folder.** Turning off "load remote images" didn't consistently stop one particular kind of image reference from loading anyway; it's now blocked the same way as every other case. An image referenced by a Markdown file also can no longer use a traversal trick, a drive letter, or a network path to load and display a file from elsewhere on your PC. - **The HTML preview (for `.html` files, where the optional web-preview feature is available) is more locked down.** It now only ever loads the local file itself, opens any link in your regular browser instead of a popup inside the preview, and never triggers a file download. Each preview also now uses its own temporary browser profile that's deleted afterward, instead of one shared between previews. - **A few internal communication channels are more tightly locked down.** Communication used to detect the current file selection, and a message used to signal update checks, are now scoped to your own account and verified with a one-time code, so another program on the same PC can't read or interfere with them. The preview window and the command-line/AI tool also now refuse a raw network-share path, accepting only a properly resolved local one. #### ⌨️ Command line and MCP - **The `st2k` command line and the MCP tools can no longer overwrite a source file with their own output.** `st2k pdf same.png same.png` (and `cbz`, `thumbnail`, `convert`) used to read the file and then replace it. An output that is one of the inputs is now refused before anything is written, under any spelling of the path (a different case, a relative path, a hard link), and `pdf`/`cbz` insist on a `.pdf`/`.cbz` destination. Thumbnails are also written through a temporary file, so a failed write leaves an existing output untouched. - **`st2k pdf` and `st2k cbz` say which inputs they left out, and why.** A combine with one unreadable or corrupt input used to print only the output path and exit 0. It now prints a `partial` line with the counts and one `omitted` line per left-out file (unreadable, undecodable or unencodable); `--json` returns the same as JSON, and `--strict` fails instead of writing a partial file. The MCP `pdf`/`cbz` tools return that JSON and accept `strict`. - **`st2k compress` no longer reports success when it missed the target.** Asking for a size below what a JPEG can reach used to quietly write the smallest file it could and exit 0. It now fails, writes nothing, and tells you the smallest size it can make; the MCP `compress` tool and the right-click verb follow the same rule. - **Single-file `st2k` commands reject extra file names instead of ignoring them.** `st2k strip a.jpg b.jpg` used to strip only the first file and say nothing about the second. Every single-file command now refuses a surplus argument before doing anything; `pdf`, `cbz`, `batch` and `prebuild` still take a list. #### 📸 Screenshots - **The colour picker froze on its first mouse move.** Since 2.5.0 the eyedropper locked up the moment its magnifier tried to draw, so it never showed a colour and had to be killed. It paints again, and a test now runs the picker's paint path end to end so it cannot silently come back. - **The screenshot tool's hotkey and preview toggle no longer lag your keyboard system-wide.** Both used to run directly on the low-level keyboard hook, so a busy moment, launching an app or opening the preview, could make typing anywhere on your PC feel briefly sluggish. That work now happens off the hook entirely. - **The screenshot tool is more reliable overall.** Capturing an HDR screen is more stable, and across multiple monitors it's faster, since it no longer sets up a fresh rendering device for every monitor. Quitting the screenshot helper from its tray icon now actually keeps it stopped instead of occasionally restarting itself, and the tray tooltip now warns you if it couldn't set itself to start automatically at logon. If copying a screenshot to the clipboard fails, the overlay now stays open instead of closing as though it worked, and dragging a selection, moving text, or drawing a shape in the overlay is smoother, with less flicker. Uploading a screenshot whose filename contains quote marks or line breaks no longer risks corrupting the upload request either. #### 🔑 Licensing & sign-in - **Licence records are safe when two people use the same PC.** A background check that keeps track of licence status on shared computers could, in rare timing, have one person's update quietly overwrite another's. It now waits its turn properly, and gives up cleanly rather than overwriting newer information if it ever can't. - **Signing in no longer intermittently fails when your browser's request arrives in more than one piece.** The local sign-in helper previously only read the first chunk of the browser's request; it now waits for and reassembles the whole thing. #### 🌍 Languages - **Italian and Brazilian Portuguese "Set as wallpaper (stretched)" no longer used the word for "spanned".** - **The screenshot editor and the Quick preview's outline sidebar now follow your chosen language.** Every tool name, toolbar tooltip, on-screen hint, and the text-formatting flyout in the screenshot editor, plus the Markdown outline sidebar's "Contents" header, used to show fixed English text no matter which language you picked. All of it is translated now, in every shipped language. - **Text in the Convert and welcome windows no longer gets cut off in languages that need more room than English.** Both windows were built out of boxes just wide (or tall) enough for the English wording, and Windows silently trims anything that does not fit, so several translations lost the end of a label or a whole line of an explanation. Every row in both windows is now sized from the translated text that actually goes in it. In Convert that covers the "Resize", "Pad to the exact size" and "Write every preset size" checkboxes, which now sit in their own full-width rows, and also the "Output format:" and "Output folder:" labels, the "Settings…" and "Convert" buttons and the "px" suffix, which are measured and given the width their own translation needs. Filipino showed "Format ng" where the label reads "Format ng output:", and Russian's "Преобразовать" filled its button edge to edge. In the welcome window it covers the opening paragraph, every switch label, and the muted explanation under each switch. The portable copy's thumbnails explanation was the worst case: in 26 of the 36 languages it stopped mid-sentence after two lines, so the German copy said what the option does but never that Settings can turn it back off. The window grows if a translation genuinely needs the room. English is laid out exactly as before. #### ♿ Accessibility - **The Settings nav rail and the settings search box are now fully usable from the keyboard.** Pressing the arrow keys to move between categories now switches the page right away, matching a mouse click, instead of only moving focus until you pressed Enter or Space again; screen readers are also told when the selected category changes. The search box's results dropdown can now be driven with the arrow keys too. #### 🩺 Diagnostics - **`st2k doctor` now names Windows' own "no thumbnails on network folders" policy**, and says when the file you point it at is on a network drive. That policy leaves every local file working and every file on a mapped drive as a plain icon, with nothing else reporting a problem, which read as a bug in the extension. - **The diagnostics bundle is safe to hand to a stranger, and complete enough to be useful.** The zip that `st2k doctor --bundle` writes now carries a snapshot of your stored settings, which a bug report about a format toggle, a menu item or a convert default previously needed as a separate export. That snapshot leaves out your sign-in (the refresh token, the licence certificate and the account identity) by the same rule the settings export already uses, so anything stored alongside them later stays out as well. #### 🛡️ Robustness - **A broken image can no longer take Explorer down through Copy to clipboard, Set as wallpaper, Set folder icon or Compress to size.** Those four now decode in the helper process the other verbs already use, and fall back to the old path only when the helper is not installed. - **Slow or hostile files cannot pile up background work inside Explorer.** SVG rendering and the right-click preview thumbnail now use the same time-limit bookkeeping as every other background decode, a bookkeeping race that could permanently refuse new work after enough timeouts is fixed, and a file that grows while it is being read is stopped at the size limit instead of read in full. - **One video Windows cannot decode can no longer take every thumbnail on the PC down with it.** A reporter found an MP4 whose H.264 stream uses the 4:4:4 colour format, which the Windows decoder does not support; on Windows 10 the decoder hung instead of declining, our thumbnail code waited on it forever, and Explorer's whole thumbnail system stopped for every file type until a reboot. Three things changed. SageThumbs 2K now reads the video's codec profile itself and skips the Windows decoder entirely for the H.264 profiles it cannot handle (4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 10-bit), so such a file just keeps its icon, instantly. Every video decode the shell asks for now runs on a worker with a hard time limit, so a decoder that hangs can never hold Explorer's thumbnail thread again. And if a decoder does wedge, the thumbnail host turns video off for itself and, once idle, quietly restarts, which is what a reboot used to buy. The built-in doctor now names this profile problem when you point it at such a file. - **3D model previews are more robust against malformed or truncated files.** An `.obj`, `.ply`, or `.stl` file that's been cut short, has an unusual property type, or contains an invalid vertex no longer fails outright or misaligns the whole model; SageThumbs now renders as much of it as it validly can, the same way it already handled a few other kinds of damage. - **Malformed JPEG2000 and JPEG files can no longer hang or crash SageThumbs while decoding.** A `.jp2` file crafted with an extreme number of layers or an implausible internal structure is now refused quickly instead of being processed, and JPEG2000 images decode with the correct brightness in more cases than before. A JPEG with a corrupted internal compression table is now refused instead of risking a crash or a hang. - **Opening a malformed or crafted video file for a thumbnail can no longer hang, crash, or use excessive memory.** A handful of size and time limits are now enforced while reading MP4 and other container files, so a damaged or deliberately unusual file is refused cleanly instead of stalling the thumbnail process. - **The "Max file size" setting is now honoured by a couple of preview paths that used to ignore it.** Some in-process video preview tiers, and RAR archive cover-art extraction, previously read past the size you'd set in Settings; both now respect it. - **SageThumbs is more stable when previewing many files in quick succession.** It no longer risks running out of background worker slots during a burst of preview activity, and Windows Explorer no longer occasionally stalls while waiting on a busy file-properties read. - **Debug logging costs nothing when it is off.** Log lines are only formatted when the Debug switch is on, instead of being built and then dropped. #### 🖥️ Interface - **Dark title bars and High Contrast mode both render correctly in more situations.** Older Windows 10 builds use a different, unofficial way of requesting a dark title bar than modern Windows does; SageThumbs now picks the right one for your version instead of always assuming the modern one. Settings and the preview window previously ignored Windows' High Contrast mode entirely; both now switch to your system's high-contrast colours like the rest of Windows does. - **Clicking Install in the About window's update checker no longer freezes the window.** The window used to lock up while the update downloaded in the background; it now stays responsive and you can still see it progress.

📦 Portable (no installer)

Extract and run. Nothing is installed, nothing goes in the registry, no admin needed. Settings live in SageThumbs2K.ini next to the exe.

You get the app and the command line tool: settings, convert and resize, quick preview, screenshots, OCR, the colour picker and the folder tools.

Explorer thumbnails and the classic right-click menu work too. Turn them on with st2k register, or the button in Settings under Advanced. That registers the handler for your user account only: no installer, no administrator rights, nothing written machine-wide. st2k register --off undoes it, and you should run that before moving or deleting the folder, otherwise Windows is left pointing at a file that has gone.

Three things still need the installer, because Windows only accepts them registered for the whole machine: the Explorer preview pane, the Details pane columns, and the Windows 11 right-click menu (the compact one).
