- **Here we are, 295 commits and 51 releases after what I thought was a final product ^_^** Goes to show... that even though you think something is Production ready. It never really is. So take this as a lesson to start now, because if you wait until you think you're done, you never will be and even when you finally think you are, the world will show you you're not, lol. ### Added - **Flash video (`.flv`) files now get thumbnails.** Windows has no way to open an FLV at all, so these have always shown a blank icon, whatever was inside them. All three of the codecs people actually have now work: - **H.264** is handed to Windows as a single frame in a form it already understands. - **VP6** and **Sorenson Spark**, the older Flash codecs, are decoded by SageThumbs itself, using the same pure-Rust decoders the Ruffle Flash emulator ships. Nothing is unpacked to disk, and the rest of the file is never read. The two older decoders run in a separate, short-lived helper process, so even a corrupt or deliberately malformed video can only lose you that one thumbnail; it cannot disturb File Explorer. Raised by @taylor-p-mason (#26). - **HDR video thumbnails (VP9 Profile 2 and 3).** 10-bit and 12-bit VP9, the kind used for HDR and 4K streaming, never produced a thumbnail: Windows decodes only the ordinary 8-bit kind, and that is still true even with Microsoft's free VP9 extension installed and a graphics card that can do it in hardware. SageThumbs now decodes those itself. Ordinary 8-bit VP9 is untouched and still goes to Windows, which is faster and uses your graphics card. The built-in decoder only runs when Windows has already declined, and it runs in a separate short-lived process, so a corrupt file costs you one thumbnail rather than disturbing File Explorer. Raised by @taylor-p-mason (#26). - **Android app packages now show their real icon.** `.apk` files, and the split-bundle wrappers `.xapk`, `.apks` and `.apkm`, get the launcher icon the app actually declares rather than a generic file icon. An APK is a zip, so simply picking an image out of it would have grabbed an arbitrary graphic from somewhere inside the app; instead the app manifest is read to find which icon it nominates, and the highest resolution version of that icon is used. Apps that only ship an adaptive icon (one Android assembles from separate layers at runtime) fall back to the best plain image in the package. Requested by @SamRohod (#24). - **A setting for which frame a video thumbnail comes from.** Settings, Appearance, "Video frame at (% in)". Films that open on a black distributor card or a slow fade used to thumbnail as a black rectangle, which looks exactly like SageThumbs failing. The default is 30% of the way in, unchanged from before, so nothing moves unless you move it. Raised by @taylor-p-mason (#26). - **Bigger thumbnails are now allowed.** The maximum in Settings, General goes up to 2560 pixels instead of 1024. The old limit was historical rather than technical. The default stays at 1024 deliberately: larger thumbnails cost memory, generation time and cache space, so this is a ceiling you opt into rather than one everybody pays for. Note that it controls the size SageThumbs generates, not how large Explorer chooses to draw a tile. Raised by @taylor-p-mason (#26). - **Very large images get thumbnails now.** Pictures too big to load into memory, such as AI-upscaled wallpapers running to hundreds of megabytes and tens of thousands of pixels across, previously showed a plain file icon. They are now read straight off the disk a strip at a time and shrunk as they are read, so a 340-megapixel photograph produces a thumbnail in about two seconds without ever being held in memory whole. The default size limit in Settings, General has been raised to match; if you had lowered it yourself, your choice is still respected. ### Changed - **Settings no longer freezes the defaults when you press Save.** Previously, opening Settings and saving wrote down every value on the page, whether or not you had touched it. That quietly pinned each one forever, so any later improvement to a default could never reach you. Values you have not changed are now left alone and continue to follow the default; values you deliberately set are stored and honoured exactly as before. ### Fixed - **Some transparent AVIF images showed no thumbnail at all.** An AVIF and a video can share the same underlying file structure, and they are told apart by a short code near the start of the file. One of the codes that image editors write was missing from the list, so those pictures were treated as videos, produced no frame, and were given up on rather than being handed to the picture decoders. They now thumbnail correctly, and the check reads every format marker the file declares rather than only the first, so an unusual encoder cannot cause this again. - **Photographs from Canon cameras thumbnailed about thirteen times slower than they needed to.** A Canon raw file stores its sensor data in a form that, from the outside, is indistinguishable from an ordinary photo, and SageThumbs was picking that instead of the preview picture the camera saved alongside it. Since nothing can display sensor data as an image, the whole shortcut was wasted and the file took the slow route. - **Large photographs thumbnailed far slower than necessary.** A big JPEG was decoded at full size and then shrunk, rather than asked for a small version to begin with. A folder of large wallpapers now pre-builds in around a tenth of the time it used to. - **"Build thumbnails here" did nothing on a drive root.** Right-clicking a whole drive (`E:\`) appeared to do nothing at all, while the same entry worked on any ordinary folder. A drive root ends in a backslash, and that backslash was being swallowed by the quoting rules Windows uses to pass the folder to the program, so what arrived was not a path that could exist. Reported by @taylor-p-mason (#26). - **That same menu entry was labelled `(?)`.** The caption is written into the registry when SageThumbs registers itself, and it was being looked up in a list that the shell extension ships only a trimmed copy of, so the text came back empty. It now says what it should, in every language, and corrects itself when you update. Reported by @taylor-p-mason (#26). - **The File Types columns can be resized again.** Extension and Category were fixed at a width too narrow for their own labels in several languages, and widening the window did not help because only the Description column grew. Reported by @taylor-p-mason (#26). - **The Quick preview window could close when you pressed a selection key on an empty pane.** Selecting text with the keyboard first asks which line is currently at the top of the view. When the pane had no text in it there was no such line, and the calculation was asked for a value between zero and minus one, which stops the program rather than answering "none". It now answers "none". Only the preview window was ever affected by this; File Explorer itself was not. - **Thumbnails are no longer randomly smaller than the files next to them.** Explorer centres a thumbnail rather than enlarging it, so any file whose source picture was smaller than the icon size drew as a visibly smaller tile. Photoshop files showed this worst, because the preview Photoshop bakes into a PSD varies in size depending on the app and version that wrote it, so two PSDs side by side could get different tile sizes for no visible reason. Reported by @eddy593 (#25). - **A malformed MP4 could read past the end of the file.** A 64-bit box size could wrap around, so the parser kept walking instead of stopping. - **Photos carrying rotation information could thumbnail sideways.** The two faster decode paths skipped the rotation step the normal path applies. - **7 different AI code reviews were run over the entire codebase** (Opus 5 UC, Fable 5 UC, DeepSeek v4 Pro (2g), Kimi K3, Qwen 3.8 Max, Grok 4.6, GLM 5.3; 264 confirmed issues are fixed. Every file parser is now fuzzed on every build, which previously only happened on the developer's own machine.Verified installer

Portable (no installer)
Extract and run. Nothing is installed, nothing goes in the registry, no admin needed.
Settings live in SageThumbs2K.ini next to the exe.
You get the app and the command line tool: settings, convert and resize, quick preview, screenshots, OCR, the colour picker and the folder tools.
Explorer thumbnails and the classic right-click menu work too. Turn them on with
st2k register, or the button in Settings under Advanced. That registers the handler
for your user account only: no installer, no administrator rights, nothing written
machine-wide. st2k register --off undoes it, and you should run that before moving
or deleting the folder, otherwise Windows is left pointing at a file that has gone.
Three things still need the installer, because Windows only accepts them registered for the whole machine: the Explorer preview pane, the Details pane columns, and the Windows 11 right-click menu (the compact one).
