References bibliographic software

Description

References is bibliographic software (reference management software) for authors of scientific manuscripts and for management of bibliographic data of articles in journals, of books, of chapters in books and other document types including notes, web sites and electronic documents. References supports LaTeX including BibTeX, LibreOffice and Microsoft Word. Bibliographic records in Medline format are easily imported. Retrieval of references is possible by keywords, authors' or editors' names, date of publication, title of article, book title, journal name and other data fields.

Lists of references and formatted citations in the text can be compiled in any bibliographic style required by the publishers of scientific journals. References is provided as text based terminal program compiled for Linux- and Windows-systems. An external text editor is required for editing data and text.

References is open source software distributed under the terms of the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE, Version 2 (FSF).

Changes

  • The user interface of the software has been improved

  • Parts of the manual have been rewritten

  • The terminology of format definitions has been made more precise. Format definitions for in-text-citations and lists of references are made available on the project web page (supplementary files)

  • Export of data for import into the Zotero software has been implemented, this function is available in the bibtex-for-zotero package

Installation

Details of the installation procedure are described in the References manual (refsdok.pdf): section 11.

The complete distribution of References v4.3f comprises the following archive files:

  • refs-4.3f-win64.zip: Windows 64-bit binary executable files, sample databases, documentation (to be preferred by users of modern Windows versions with the Windows Terminal or ConEmu terminal implementations capable of processing ANSI escape codes)

  • refs-4.3f-win32.zip: Windows 32-bit binary executable files, sample databases, documentation

  • refs-4.3f-x86_64.tar.gz: Linux 64-bit (x86_64) binary executable files, sample databases, documentation (to be preferred by users of modern Linux versions)

  • refs-4.3f-i386.tar.gz: Linux 32-bit binary executable files, sample databases, documentation

  • refs-4.3f-src.tar.gz: (source code: Linux, Windows, only required, if users wish to compile the executable files themselves)

Both the win32 and the win64 executable binary files will run on 64 bit Windows systems (e.g. Windows 10).

References for Windows includes an executable file of AWK (Kernighan's awk).

For this version a correction of a bug (patch 1) is provided:

  • refs-4.3f-src-p1.tar.gz: source code patch file

  • refs-4.3f-win64-p1.zip: patched Windows 64-bit executable file.

  • refs-4.3f-x86_64-p1.tar.gz: patched Linux 64-bit (x86_64) executable file.
