INSTALL

You must have software that will let you unarchive files if you are using the TAR file. If you use windows, install 7zip (it is open source). If you are on OSX, you can use Unarchiver.

Install Virtualbox.

If you use windows, install VirtualBox-4.3.26-98988-Win.exe. If you use OSX, install VirtualBox-4.3.26-98988-OSX.dmg. If you use Linux, follow the instructions at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads to install the version of Virtualbox appropriate for your operating system.

Install Virtualbox extensions (optional)

Once you have installed Virtualbox, open Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.26-98988.vbox-extpack

Install Rails Workshop VM

Open Rails-Girls-Workshop.ova. This will install the Rails Girls Workshop VM.

Notes

  1. This has been tested on a Mac Mini (2012), Macbook Air (2011), Thinkpad T42. Any additional testing would be greatly appreciated
  2. Change settings of the VM by opening virtualbox, right click on VM, click on 'Settings'.
  3. The Video Memory is currently set to 128M to make things speedier. If you are on a machine with limited resources, you may need to decrease the amount of Video Memory used by the VM. The changes can be made in 'Display' under VM settings.
  4. You may be able to speed up the VM by increasing the 'Base Memory' in 'System' under VM settings.
  5. If internet does not work, (in 'Network' under VM settings), ensure 'Enable Network Adapter' is enabled and attached to 'NAT'.
  6. If a notice about USB issues pops up and you do not wish to install the Virtualbox extensions:
  7. Click on 'Ports' under VM settings
  8. Click on 'USB'
  9. Uncheck 'Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller
  10. Click 'Ok'
  11. Add any others.
