PowerPC Linux Builds
This is an umbrella project for a few different subprojects, all related to keeping old PowerPC Mac hardware running and reasonably up-to-date.
debian-ppc64
This subproject builds packages that are missing and/or broken in Debian sid ppc64 (big-endian 64-bit PowerPC).
They include:
- Kernels from Debian stable, making it possible to stay on a stable kernel while otherwise using the bleeding edge sid branch for ppc64.
- ZFS for Linux packages for ppc64. ZFS is an excellent file system and works well on ppc64 but Debian only provides these packages for their tier 1 architectures. This repository provides the missing ZFS packages for ppc64.
- Experimental kernels for testing different features.
These packages are suitable for Mac hardware with G5 series CPUs. They may also work on POWER systems, e.g. Talos but that's all untested since I don't have any such system (if you do then please let me know how it works).
debian-powerpc
Thus subproject builds packages that are missing and/or broken in Debian sid powerpc (big-endian 32-bit PowerPC).
They include:
- Kernels from Debian stable, making it possible to stay on a stable kernel while otherwise using the bleeding edge sid branch for powerpc.
- ZFS for Linux packages for powerpc. ZFS is an excellent file system and works well at least with powerpc64 kernels (G5, POWER, ...), but it might be a bad match for pure 32-bit kernels as it's very memory hungry. Debian only provides these packages for their tier 1 architectures. This repository provides the missing ZFS packages for powerpc.
- (inactive) emacs packages when upstream lags behind due to FTBS issues.
ubuntu-bionic-powerpc
A partial rebuild of Ubuntu 18.04 for PowerPC (big-endian, 32-bit), continuing where upstream dropped support. Most packages have been successfully built and upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 is possible in most cases.
