The objective is to provide open implementation for education, experiments, enthusiasts and also to open way to its use in low-cost applications by using common hardware and open-source software. Because European Union declared this protocol as standard for fileldbus. If you want RS-485 multi-master open-source protocol with distributed round robin media arbitration then use uLAN http://ulan.sourceforge.net/ which I have started at PiKRON company a which is used and extended in cooperation with Petr Smolik, other PBmaster project member. I have never used Profibus for my company (http://pikron.com/) applications, but when some integration with it is hard requirement by people interested in our notion control, robots, medical and or laboratory systems then I have thought that Profibus implementation can have value. And it could be enabler to play with third party PLCs and other stuff at university laboratories, which I consider as interesting.
