OpenEBS 4.6.2 Release Notes

Release Summary

OpenEBS v4.6.2 is a patch release on top of v4.6.1, delivering targeted fixes and minor enhancements across the Helm chart and the storage engines. It fixes image pulls for the MinIO pods that serve as Loki's object store, a backup and restore hang in Local PV ZFS, and failing operations on Local PV Rawfile volumes created before storage pools were introduced.

This release includes new patch releases of Replicated PV Mayastor (v2.12.2), Local PV ZFS (v2.11.2) and Local PV Rawfile (v0.15.3). Local PV LVM remains at v1.10.1 and Local PV Hostpath remains at v4.6.0.

v4.6.2 includes all changes from v4.6.0 and v4.6.1. See those release notes for the features and fixes in the 4.6 line.

Upgrading is recommended for:

  • Anyone on v4.3.0 through v4.6.1 running the chart's default Loki and MinIO setup.
  • Local PV ZFS users on v4.6.0 or v4.6.1 who back up volumes with Velero.
  • Local PV Rawfile users with volumes created before storage pools were introduced, for example with v4.4.0.

Change Summary

General

  • Switch the OpenEBS chart's Loki MinIO images to an OpenEBS mirror on Docker Hub (docker.io/openebs/minio and docker.io/openebs/mc), keeping the same image tags. v4.3.0 through v4.6.1 pull the minio and mc images from quay.io/minio, which can no longer be pulled anonymously, so MinIO pods can fail to start with ImagePullBackOff, for example on fresh installs (https://github.com/openebs/openebs/pull/4337)

Note for upgrades: kubectl openebs upgrade runs Helm with --reset-then-reuse-values, so upgraded releases switch to the mirror automatically. Repositories you set explicitly, such as a private registry mirror, are kept. helm upgrade --reuse-values keeps the old quay.io/minio repositories; use --reset-then-reuse-values (Helm 3.14+) instead, or set the repositories explicitly as shown below.

Note for users who can't upgrade yet: Set loki.minio.image.repository=docker.io/openebs/minio and loki.minio.mcImage.repository=docker.io/openebs/mc on your existing release. The mirror carries the image tags used by v4.3.0 through v4.6.1.

Replicated Storage (Mayastor)

  • Switch Loki's MinIO images in the Mayastor chart to the same OpenEBS mirror. kubectl mayastor upgrade moves the MinIO repositories to the mirror only if they are still set to the old quay.io/minio defaults, and leaves custom repositories unchanged (https://github.com/openebs/mayastor-extensions/pull/1068)
  • The io-engine and control plane are unchanged from v2.12.1.

Note: The Mayastor chart change applies to standalone Mayastor installs. When Mayastor is installed through the OpenEBS chart, its bundled Loki is disabled in favour of the OpenEBS chart's Loki, which is covered under General above.

Refer to the Mayastor v2.12.2 release notes for detailed changes.

Local Storage

LVM

  • No changes; Local PV LVM remains at v1.10.1.

ZFS

  • Fix the backup and restore pipeline so that a failure on either side is reported and stops the other side. In v2.11.0 and v2.11.1 (OpenEBS v4.6.0 and v4.6.1), a receiver that exited early could leave zfs send blocked indefinitely, keeping the ZFSBackup in Init and blocking later Velero backups. A failed zfs send could also be reported as a successful backup. Failed transfers are now marked Failed instead of staying in Init or being reported as Done (https://github.com/openebs/zfs-localpv/pull/777)

Note for Velero users: Failures that were previously reported as Done are now reported as Failed, so the first backups after upgrading may surface transfers that were already broken.

Rawfile

This release includes the changes from Local PV Rawfile v0.15.2 and v0.15.3, as v4.6.1 shipped v0.15.1.

  • Add a rawfile-localpv.tls.insecureSkipVerify Helm value (default false) that skips x509 verification when the driver's Kubernetes client talks to the API server, for environments with malformed API server certificates. Only enable it if you understand the security implications (https://github.com/openebs/rawfile-localpv/pull/417)
  • Add rawfile-localpv.node.podLabels and rawfile-localpv.controller.podLabels Helm values for Pod labels that are not used as selector labels (https://github.com/openebs/rawfile-localpv/pull/416)
  • Fix operations such as volume expansion failing on volumes created before storage pools were introduced in v0.13.0 (for example, with OpenEBS v4.4.0). The metadata of these volumes still pointed to the backing file under the old /data path; the node plugin now migrates it to the storage pool layout when it starts. If a volume's backing file isn't found in its storage pool, its path is left unchanged and a warning is logged for manual inspection (https://github.com/openebs/rawfile-localpv/pull/422)
  • Treat StorageClass parameters with empty or null-like values ("", none, null, nil) as unset, so the parameter's default applies (https://github.com/openebs/rawfile-localpv/pull/413)

Hostpath

  • No changes; Local PV Hostpath remains at v4.6.0.
