NOOP v8.1.0

One genuinely new thing, and a round of fixes from your reports. The new thing is a first for NOOP: your strap doesn't just measure your workout anymore, it coaches you through it.

Update from the Releases page, AltStore, or brew upgrade as usual.

New: Live Sessions (beta) — a silent coach on your wrist

Start a session from Today, pocket your phone, and train. NOOP holds you to a heart-rate band that this morning's Charge helped set, and it talks to you through the strap itself:

  • Two light taps: you've got room, give a bit more.
  • Three heavy taps: you're over today's ceiling, ease off.
  • Silence: you're on track. Silence is the reward.

The screen is one breathing ring, no number to chase (long-press if you must). It never invents a reading: if the signal drops, the ring greys and coaching pauses rather than guessing. At the end you get an honest summary, time in band, the handful of cues it sent, and your session streak. Everything computed and stored on your device, like always.

It works with just the WHOOP you already wear, and it's at its best on steady-state work (Zone 2, tempo, "don't overcook my easy day"). Pair any Bluetooth chest strap in Devices and the coaching automatically gets sharper for intervals. It ships beta and deliberately conservative; the full guide, including exactly how Charge sets your band, is on the wiki: Live Sessions.

If you try it, tell us how the buzz timing felt. That feedback tunes it.

Fixes

Backups now carry your settings. Restoring a backup brought your history back but not your profile, weight, height, age, max HR and unit preferences all reset. Backups now include them and restore re-applies them. Old backups still restore fine (just without settings, they never had them). Thanks sedomo and metaljay. (#1000)

iOS folder picker for Backup & Sync. The folder chooser could sit there refusing to confirm a selection with no explanation. It now starts in a sensible folder, and if a selection genuinely fails you get told, with a workaround, instead of a silent dead-end. If it still misbehaves on your device we want to hear about it on the same issue. (#1000)

Android: cards no longer overlap their section headers. The Heart Rate and Last Workouts sections could render their card on top of the header in the new layout. Stacked properly now. (#991)

iPhone: the battery "days left" estimate is back. The redesign dropped the "~X days left" readout next to your strap battery. It's back on the Today battery row. Thanks ruedigermunz. (#992)

Under the hood

  • The coaching engine is a pure, deterministic module with an identical twin on Android, pinned by matched test vectors on both platforms (28 tests), the same way our scoring engines are built.
  • New backup container carries a second settings.json entry; the format stays byte-compatible across iPhone, Mac and Android, and with every older NOOP.

Issues closed in this release

[#991], [#992], [#1000]. (#1001 closed as not-a-bug: that log pattern comes from an un-clocked strap banking no history; charging and re-clocking the strap is the fix. [#993] and [#994] are awaiting reporter details.)

With thanks

Reports and corroboration from sedomo, metaljay, spasypaddy, ruedigermunz, and everyone who filed with a Test Centre export. Keep them coming, and if you take Live Sessions for a ride, the board wants your buzz-timing verdict.
