NOOP v8.0.0 ⚑ Liquid Metal

The biggest release NOOP has ever shipped. A brand new look and feel called Liquid Metal, rebuilt on every single screen, on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android at the same time. Plus a stack of real fixes to your health data, your strap connection, workouts, sleep and more.

This is version one of a living design. It will keep changing and getting better as you tell us what works, exactly like NOOP always has.

🌊 Liquid Metal, the new NOOP

We rebuilt the whole app around one idea: your body runs on fluid, so the app should feel like it too.

  • Real liquid, not a picture of it. Your Charge, Effort and Rest are vessels of living liquid, glass with fine metal flake suspended in it. The fluid sloshes when you tilt the phone, the flake drifts and catches the light, and the surface stays level with the world. It is drawn in real time, not a canned animation.
  • A sky that moves through your day. Every screen sits under a soft day-of-sky backdrop that shifts from dawn to dusk with the clock. Calm at night, bright at midday.
  • It responds to you. Tap a score and the liquid splashes. Pull to refresh and a vessel fills as you drag, then releases. Little haptic taps land as things settle. Numbers count up instead of snapping.
  • On every screen, on every platform. Today, Health, Sleep, Live, Stress, Workouts, Trends, Insights, Coach, Devices, Settings and the rest all speak the same language now, and iPhone, Mac and Android were rebuilt together so they finally read as the same app.
  • Charts stay sharp. We did not liquid-ify the things that need precision. Your graphs, hypnograms and multi-series bars stay crisp and exact. The liquid is for the gauges and the atmosphere, not your data.
  • Prefer the old look? There is a Liquid / Classic toggle in Settings. Nothing is forced on you.

Everything below is real data bound to the same engine as before. This was a reskin of the surface, not a change to your numbers.

✨ New in the flow

  • ❀️ Live, beat-by-beat heart rate on Today. The home screen now shows your real-time pulse as a flowing liquid thread while the strap streams, not a five minute average. It falls back to today's banked trace when the strap is off.
  • πŸ“… Swipe between days on Today. Swipe left and right, or tap the date for a calendar, to walk back through any day. Every card re-reads that day.
  • πŸ’§ Metaphors that make sense. Hydration is literally water filling a vessel toward your goal. Breathe is a vessel that fills as you inhale and drains as you exhale.
  • 🎯 Every card opens its own thing. Tapping Fitness Age, Vitality, HRV, Resting HR, Respiration, SpOβ‚‚, Skin Temp, Steps or Calories now opens that metric's own trend, instead of dumping you on the shared Health screen.

🩺 Sharper health data

  • 🌑️ WHOOP 4.0 skin temperature is fixed. On the 4.0, every worn night was reading around 8Β°C because the raw value was converted on the wrong scale, so it failed the worn check and your skin temp and illness signal quietly disappeared. It is now converted per strap family and reads correctly again. (#938)
  • 🫁 Respiratory rate no longer reads double. A WHOOP 4.0 report showed breathing rate at roughly twice the truth (11 shown as ~21) on both CSV import and live. We traced the entire chain end to end, confirmed nothing was double counting, and added a regression test pinned to that exact 11 breaths-per-minute case so it can never creep back. (#958)
  • πŸ’ͺ Per-workout Effort stopped reading blank. A session that ended with sparse heart rate could show no Effort even though the day total counted it. Effort is now backfilled from the same strap trace your graph uses, filling only the blanks and never overwriting a real value. (#961)

πŸ“‘ A rock-solid strap connection

  • πŸ” The WHOOP 4.0 connect / disconnect loop is fixed. A slow-but-healthy handshake could get stuck bouncing forever, connect, drop, reconnect, on repeat. The bond watchdog now backs off a little further each bounce and, after four tries, stops fighting and shows you the re-pair guide instead of looping. (#971, [#50], [#747], [#844])
  • 🧡 No more scoring races. The analysis engine can no longer run two passes at once and trip over its own self-healing, the live stream toggle is pinned to the right thread, and a hot per-frame check was hoisted out of the loop. Quieter, steadier, lighter. (#956, [#957], [#949])

πŸƒ Workouts

  • πŸ‘» "Two workouts, one vanished" is fixed. A live session and its auto-detected shadow could briefly both appear, then one would swallow the other and drag in an implausible interpolated heart rate. The detected shadow of a real logged session is now dropped on read, so you only ever see the real one. (#975)
  • πŸ”Ž Auto-workouts are now explainable. Every auto-detect decision writes a trace, so an "it appeared then disappeared" moment shows up in an export instead of being a mystery. (#975)
  • πŸ“ Tightened the spacing under the Typical Effort ring on both platforms. Thanks quanturtle. (#973)

😴 Sleep and Test Centre

  • πŸ§ͺ Test Centre capture counts are honest now. The guided rows used to show "Capturing 1 of 3" off a wall clock, so running Sleep, Battery and Steps together left every row stuck and flagged incomplete even when they were working. Each mode now counts the actual days it captured, independently, so "0 of 3" means nothing landed and "3 of 3" means it is done. (#965)

πŸ“ˆ Charts

  • βœ‚οΈ Trend charts stopped clipping their peaks. On a spiky trend (Stress especially) the top of the line and the top axis label were getting cut off. Charts now fit the axis to your data with a little headroom, so the peaks and the label are fully visible. Your colours and values are unchanged.

πŸ–₯️ Mac

  • ⬜ White headers are gone. The moving sky was rendering pure white on macOS. Fixed, so Mac gets the same dark, edge-to-edge sky as iPhone.
  • πŸ“Œ Menu-bar popover stops jumping. The little sync line no longer resizes and slides the menu-bar panel while a backfill runs. (#962)
  • 🌍 More of the Mac is translated. The Charge breakdown labels and the connection pill are now localized, including for VoiceOver, with Italian, Spanish and Chinese strings added. (#966)
  • 🧊 A large-history navigation path was reworked so switching sidebar sections does less redundant work. (#833)

πŸ”Œ More ways in

  • βš–οΈ Health Connect body composition (Android). NOOP now reads body fat and lean mass from Health Connect, and derives a BMI from your profile height (clearly labelled as derived, since Health Connect carries no BMI record). Works even on a scale-only day. (#951, [#150])
  • πŸ’ Oura history and battery on Android. The local Oura path now backfills historical events with a correct ring-time to real-time anchor, and reports ring battery on the live path, matching the iPhone. (#953, [#955], [#952])
  • πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ German. The Android navigation and menus are now fully translated to German, matching the iPhone. (#694)

πŸ”§ Under the hood

  • ⏳ Big history offloads are smoother. Decoding a full strap history was happening on the main thread and could stutter the app. It now runs off to the side while every write stays safely in order.
  • βœ… Reviewed hard before it left the building. The whole release went through a multi-angle code review across all three platforms, which caught and fixed a few surface bugs: Steps showing the wrong day when you swiped back, a workout Effort number that disagreed with itself, and an Android calories detail that could open blank. All fixed. 1,210 automated tests pass, plus the full Android suite.
  • ✍️ Swept the em-dashes out of the app's text and dropped a stale stat from the donation card. (#171)

πŸ“₯ Get NOOP

  • 🍎 Mac: brew tap noopapp/noop && brew trust noopapp/noop && brew install --cask noop
  • πŸ€– Android: download the APK below
  • πŸ“± iPhone / iPad: sideload the IPA below with AltStore / SideStore, or build from source

Lockstep across all three platforms.

πŸ’š Keep it alive

NOOP is free, offline, and built by one person in their own time. A WHOOP membership runs a few hundred a year, for life. If NOOP is saving you that, a small donation genuinely keeps it going. The address is on the Donations page. No pressure, ever.

This is version one of Liquid Metal. Tell us what feels great and what does not, and it will keep evolving from here, the same way the rest of NOOP always has.

NOOP is an independent, source-available project, not affiliated with WHOOP. Not a medical device, and nothing here is medical advice.
