I picked up a D-Link DNS-320 network appliance, which had abysmal OOtB support for OSX. However, thanks to D-Link helpfully providing a Debian "squeeze" distribution for the device and the *awesome* folks involved with netatalk, the device is now a screamer.
In my mind, netatalk is the Samba for Apple geeks: an outstanding open source implementation that really is well assembled.
My sincere thanks!

It's a great idea, but as far as I can tell the source code (at least for Linux) for Berkeley DB is no longer available since Oracle acquired it.

netatalk is awesome. Using it on FreeBSD to share files for Mac clients running OS X 10.7.x. Everything including Time Machine works.
