This VM is created for 2 reasons: 1. Very little initial setup work required to make a Library Management System live, within minutes. 2. This system should keep running for Years, without requiring Updates / Breakages.

If you are new to Virtual Machines, then please watch the Video below ( taken from my other project. just replace td with koha wherever mentioned )

After starting this VM, please access these websites ( Just Accept Any Warnings ) :

Public Website Address: https://koha.local

Staff Website Address: https://koha.local:4430

Staff Username: staff
Staff Password: change_this

from any PC on your Local Network.

For better performance, Increase the CPU Count & Memory in the VM's Settings, as available on the physical machine. Also, read the koha guidelines, given on the Wiki Page of this site, for choosing the right hardware resources.

Backup the system regularly, to avoid any issues, as in the video.

Google Search helps in finding more about Koha.

Features

  • This system combines the power of a network library server, together with the beauty of a graphical desktop. Hence the large download file size ( ~ 2.8 GB ).
  • The system level username & password is : System Username: koha System Password: change_this Also, have a look at the readme file on the desktop of the system, for any further details.
  • This system will take about 5 minutes to start fully and reach the graphical desktop. So, please be patient.
  • As this system is meant for local network usage, it uses a self-signed https certificate. Hence, browsers will throw a warning for the first time. Please accept the same and proceed ahead.
  • If you like Koha ( as i did ), you can support its development efforts, by contributing as a sponsor on https://koha-community.org/
  • A small correction in the Video below: Choose a LAN Card Network Adapter Connection in Virtualbox ( Not Wifi ), after connecting your PC to your Router / Switch, with a LAN Cable. If the Router / Switch has a DHCP Server enabled inside, then the Virtual Machine, will be able to obtain an IP Address from it, quickly.

  • Please save this webpage completely, for future references.
  • Thanks & Credits to Dr. Vimal Kumar V, for providing a pre-configured version of the Koha virtual appliance, from which this project is derived & enhanced, for serving a larger purpose. His work & inputs on koha are gratefully acknowledged here.

  • Very nice community work. I managed to download the koha library management system community edition.ova 2.6GB Though it took me some days, but with a good internet connection you can finish up in hours. There's no easy steps. You can use AI like DeepSeek to guide you with installations. For windows users only: 1. Download the community version 2.6GB. Notice the link Koha-Library-Management-System-Community-Edition .ova from this site www.sourceforge.net/projects/koha-library-management-system/files/latest/download 2. Download oracle virtual studio latest edition 7.1.6 and virtual box extension pack (release Jan.21st 2025) and run the installations. ignore all warns. www.download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/7.1.6/VirtualBox-7.1.6-167084-Win.exe 3. Download Ubuntu app from your Microsoft account or from web browser . Since Koha works on Linux Debian operating system, but we're using windows. We'll use this machine to start koha. Start the application after installing. Sometimes you can restart your pc. 4. Install python 3.13 64bit to resolve missing dependency (this is optional) 5. Start your virtual box or oracle virtual box 6. On the menu bar click file and import the koha community 2.6GB. ova file, or click on add new button with the green + sign. 7. Run the installation and wait until the window shows home, Readme icon. 8. Open the Readme file and copy out the credentials. Click on Firefox icon in the top bar and enter in the URL localhost:8080 9. Congratulations you now have the login page of koha without running a code. Enter the login details to continue and customized your library 10. Remember to change the default password That's it. If you encounter any errors or problem during the installation and login, please feel free to contact me via email: info.lightcloud@gmail.com
