What's fixed
Smaller maps, built faster. Less is kept out at sea, and a name the map's code page cannot draw gets a readable stand-in, the way mkgmap itself writes one. Contours, elevation reading and extract reading now run on vector code on every processor, AVX2 included.
- Downloads: each file is fetched once even across separate kmap runs, a damaged or replaced extract is never built from, and a dropped download picks up where it stopped on every platform. Clearing the cache removes only kmap's own files.
- Elevation: a tile that failed to download is no longer taken for sea.
- A TYP file is read in the encoding it declares, and odd but valid TYP files load.
kmap recoverwrites the same sheet on every run.- 2 builds of the same region at once are refused instead of colliding, an earlier output is never lost, and builds that share a style keep their hidden features apart.
- Ctrl+C, a full disk or a broken extract no longer leave half-written files in split, road repair or tool installs, and the terminal is left clean after a kill.
- The command line refuses malformed numbers and stray arguments instead of guessing.
- Fixes in the pixel editor: undo and night pictures.
Upgrading
Install over the top. On Debian and Ubuntu sudo apt install ./kmap_1.7.4_<arch>.deb; on
other Linux unpack the archive and put kmap on your PATH; on Windows run the installer;
on macOS replace the app. Profiles, styles and cached downloads stay put.
Which file
| System | File |
|---|---|
| Windows | kmap-1.7.4.exe - one installer, whatever the machine |
| macOS | kmap-1.7.4.dmg - one image, whatever the Mac |
| Debian, Ubuntu | kmap_1.7.4_amd64.deb for 64-bit x86, kmap_1.7.4_arm64.deb for 64-bit ARM |
| Other Linux | kmap_1.7.4_linux_x86_64.tar.xz for 64-bit x86, kmap_1.7.4_linux_aarch64.tar.xz for 64-bit ARM |
Windows 10 1803 or later, macOS 13 or later, Ubuntu 20.04, Debian 11 or later, any other
Linux with glibc 2.17 or later. dpkg --print-architecture or uname -m prints the word
you need.
First run
Nothing here is code-signed, so the first launch takes one extra click. On Windows: More info, then Run anyway. On macOS: right-click kmap and choose Open; from macOS 15, System Settings, Privacy & Security, Open Anyway.
