HorsePower is J2ME scientific calculator optimised for use on mobile phones, with the appearance of the classic range of Hewlett Packard calculators. It is designed to be compatible with a wide range of mobile devices and has therefore been written to MIDP 1.0 and CLDC 1.0. A good starter on RPN, or Reverse Polish Notation, can be found at http://www.hpmuseum.org/rpn.htm - a great resource for any Hewlett Packard calculator information. The standard keyboard layout has four columns; the first column uses the navigation keys with the up, left, right and down keys mapping to the left hand buttons from top to bottom. It's not particularly intuitive, but it does reduce the average number of keystrokes by 25 percent. There will be an option to use the standard twelve phone keys if that is preferable to the user. To save space, the Enter key on HorsePower is labelled 'ENT', and can be found at the top left of the keypad following the first shift. The application has been tested using a real Nokia 6230i (208 x 208 pixels) and several standard emulators. I would be grateful to hear how the display scales to smaller sized screens. The floating point library is kindly provided by the 'Decimal Floating Point library' project at http://sourceforge.net/projects/dfp.
