Well, one day I wanted to delete the gnome thumbnails, because they were occupying too much space. So I removed them all - no problem. But when I opened a folder with photos, those took too long to restore. Couldn't the removal be done more efficiently?

Maybe. I developed gtrm which looks for and optionally removes superfluous thumbnail files. Now I can run

gtrm ~/.thumbnails/normal

to list unnecessary thumbnail files, and if everything looks OK, I can remove them

gtrm -r ~/.thumbnails/normal
