GPlates Ubuntu Packages
=======================

To install GPlates on Ubuntu, download the .deb file appropriate for your system and double-click on it. Packages are available for 8.04 (hardy), 9.04 (jaunty), 9.10 (karmic), 10.04 (lucid) and 10.10 (maverick) 11.04(natty).

If you do not know which version of Ubuntu is installed, open a terminal and enter the following:
    cat /etc/lsb-release
and note the codename displayed.

GPlates will then be installed in /usr/bin/gplates. Note that this will overwrite older GPlates releases, if present.

Note that sample data is not provided by the Ubuntu packages. Please download the sample data zip file separately from SourceForge.

Note for Ubuntu 8.04 users
==========================

To install GPlates on Ubuntu 8.04, the use of the backports repository must be enabled on your system.

To enable the backports repository, open /etc/apt/sources.list in a text editor and remove the # at the beginning of the following line:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-backports main restricted universe multiverse

Note that the mirror URI (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ in the line above) may be different on your system. It should kept as is; only the # at the beginning of the line should be removed.
