The main purpose of the software is to calculate the crustal strain rates using the least-squares collocation method. The software is able to simultaneously determine the signal and noise of the velocities at the observation points with the best possible removal of the observation errors, or at any other position with no velocity observation. Furthermore, the software can calculate strain and rotation rate tensors at points of interest, including observation points, grid points or points along a fault line. The advantage of the software is that it can optionally consider the effect of vertical velocity on the strain rates that is principally important for an area, where the vertical velocity is the major signal compared to horizontal velocity.

Features

  • No limitation on the number of input stations
  • Two different types of covariance functions namely Gaussian and rational functions for fitting to the variance-covariance points
  • Using two methods for making the histogram of the covariance sample points and interactive editing of the points
  • Possibility to save or load coefficients of covariance functions and covariance sample points
  • Several options to estimate the strain rates at points of interest
  • Filtering velocity data at the observation points and interpolating them at points of interest other than the measuring points
  • Calculating the normal and shear strain rates on the fault lines
  • Visualization of the input data and output results
  • Exporting the stations and strain rates data as text, Google Earth, and ESRI shape files

  • Thanks for your package. I have read your paper for geostrain software. However, when I'm trying to run it using its default data, it won't work. I think I'm missing some steps when I try to run. Could you please help and provide us with the steps we have to take to implement the code?

Thank you for your comment. I got some time, after a while, to have a look to the problem. I noticed that: • There are some errors when you run the code and try to calculate the covariance functions. This is mainly because of changes in Matlab since 2014. So, I suggest you run the software with an old version, possibly 2014. Otherwise, you may comment out the following lines in the fcnfithrz.m and fcnfitvrt.m functions: % arrayfun(@(x, a, b)set(x, 'MarkerFaceColor', a, 'MarkerEdgeColor', b, 'MarkerSize', 5), ... % h_cc, repmat(['r';'g';'b'], size(h_cc)), repmat(['k'; 'k'; 'k'], size(h_cc))); % legend(h_axes, ... % h_cc{1}, {'North', 'East', 'North-East'}, ... % 'Location', 'NorthEast', ... % 'UIContextMenu', ''); They are all about plotting and should not change calculations. • Then, before any calculation, go to ‘strain->collocation->covariance function->horizontal’. • From there, make your histograms from ‘histogram->bin’s with’. Pay attention to the unit. On the plot, you can remove the points with low number of points or when they have long distances for a better estimation. • Then, ‘histogram->Covariance points’ • Then, choose a method from the ‘fitting’ menu. • You need to repeat this for the vertical component, if you are concerned about the vertical ones. After this step, you can use all the tools under the strain menu. I hope this help you and other users of the software.
