Genealogydb (GNL) is a set of genealogy data base programs for tracking family history and ancestor information in a plain text file. It features a simple editor based creation of the text file, emacs Info-mode modifying of the data, and web browser viewing of the data base with active links for moving to different entries in the data base. A special tool, dbgnl, creates this web browser view of the data base. It also features a tool to list all of the ancestors of a name in the data base (i.e., showpast) and a tool to alphabetically list all of the names occurring in the data base (i.e., listnames). This genealogy data base application supports data entry with any general purpose text editor by separating data entry from data checking. This permits faster data entry since it is not slowed by data checking. It does not change the need for data checking. It merely permits data checking to occur all at once after a group of data records have been entered.
