Installing on Linux

CurrentRelease has two separate packages. Install GCBASIC first -- it's the compiler itself and everything else depends on it. GCSTUDIO (a GCBASIC-branded build of VS Code, pre-configured with GCBASIC syntax highlighting, build tasks and F1 context help) is optional and installs alongside GCBASIC, not instead of it.

Each package is a .sh installer plus a .rar payload the installer extracts -- always keep the two files from the same folder together (an .sh from one package will not extract the other package's .rar), and verify each download against its matching .md5 file (md5sum -c *.md5, or compare by hand) before installing.

Both installers ask for your sudo password only if a required system package (e.g. rar, unrar, and for GCSTUDIO also xchm, libchm-bin) isn't already installed, and print step-by-step progress as they run.

1. GCBASIC (the compiler) -- required

Download gcbasic-gcstudio.rar and install-gcstudio.sh from CurrentRelease/GCBASIC/ into the same folder, then:

chmod +x install-gcstudio.sh
mkdir -p ~/gcstudio && cd ~/gcstudio
/path/to/install-gcstudio.sh

This installs the compiler, preferences editor and related tools into ~/gcstudio/gcbasic.

2. GCSTUDIO (VS Code editor) -- optional, needs step 1 done first

Download gcstudio-vscode.rar and install-gcstudio-vscode.sh from CurrentRelease/GCSTUDIO/ into the same folder, then run it from the same parent folder used in step 1 (it looks for gcstudio/gcbasic as a sibling, and will refuse to continue if it isn't there yet):

chmod +x install-gcstudio-vscode.sh
cd ~/gcstudio
/path/to/install-gcstudio-vscode.sh

This installs a portable copy of VS Code into ~/gcstudio/vscode, with GCBASIC's own extension, build tasks (Make HEX, Flash, etc.) and F1 context-sensitive help already configured -- it never touches or is affected by any other VS Code/VSCodium install on the same machine. Launch it via the "GC Studio Code" desktop shortcut the installer adds, or directly with ~/gcstudio/vscode/code.
