  • Freeplane is the defacto standard mind mapping application in the open source domain and my goto tool. It has all the features I have ever needed, and more than I know how to use. A big thanks to the devs! Fwiw I'm using Win10 with OpenJDK. Cheers, Dale.

  • Incredible app. It's easily my most used tool. Great for taking notes on a new API or planning a project. The fact that you can link to files on your computer or internet is great. To maximize my usage, I mapped my function buttons to style keys. So I can quickly apply styles to nodes as I create them. I also prefer it to center on the node I am currently editing. I'd like to see the ability to pass arguments to a file I open. So if I set a hyperlink: "file:/C:/WINDOWS/system32/cmd.exe" I'd like to instead do "file:/C:/WINDOWS/system32/cmd.exe /k cd C:/MyProject" to instantly open my project in the command line. Right now, freeplane adds the URL escape character %20 for spaces, which doesn't work for file system links. It would be nice if there was a toggle for change this in the Ctrl+K menu. Maybe I'll work on that and it'll be my first contribution to FreePlane! All in all, the best program I've ever used. I recommend it to everyone, though nobody listens.

  • After using it for 3 months, all I can say is that I'm really impressed by this piece of software. So well thought and rich in key functionality. It has rich functionality for content creation, structuring notes and management Thank you very much PS. As for the last review I see someone giving 1 star and stating that controls don't work... ¿¿¿?? All controls work for me.

  • What in the world did you do to Freeplane? This is a program that I have come to rely on and, consequently, I am familiar with those controls that I need. After the last upgrade (18.0.0) half of my controls do not work. I cannot create a child (or peer) node. I cannot move existing nodes to a new location. Not being able to do anything, I shut FP down. And this is on a computer that has had Freeplane installed for years... I sincerely hope that I made some error and turned something off accidentally. Feel free to correct that error. If not, I have a body of mindmaps that do not work and I will have to start looking for a substitute. 1/9/2021 Downloaded a version of 18.1.1 that was reportedly updated four hours prior to this post. Nothing has changed for me. For all intents, I still cannot create and edit a new map or edit an existing map. There WAS a windows update recently - and those folks have a terrible record for breaking existing applications. I don't care. My view is that you are offering a product that does not work in a common environment. 1/12/2021 Let me begin with an apology. I did not explore FreePlane as thoroughly as I should have. I found, under the Maps tab, two options [Viewing and Editing], with Viewing selected. I don't recall ever being given that choice before. In all honesty, I don't use MAPS tab much as I usually only have one map open at a time. Once the Edit mode was active, all was good again. I downgraded Ease and Support: I would have added the Viewing|Editing option to the FILE menu but that is just me. I also downgraded support because someone there should have told me, "Look in the MAPS tab, d******." An additional note - for reasons unclear, Windows decided to mark the MM folder where I store my maps to R/O - thank you ever so much for that, M$.

  • Feature rich program. Too rich for me. I am trying to make a monochrome (black & white) treemap, but it is impossible if you don't dive in super hard to setup templates. Also I dont understand the different colors in different levels of treemap. Why? So I just return to FreeMind.

  • I have been using mind mapping software for at least 10 years, back when Mind Manager was actually affordable and NOT subscription based. In addition I have used every free mapping tool available and Freeplane is the best by far. Don't think for a moment "free open source" means this tool isn't robust. In fact, until I watched Bill McDonald's videos on note taking and formatting I had no idea of the capabilities Freeplane has. I have been looking for one tool to use for personal knowledge management and I think I found it it in Freeplane.

  • I am using for every hour of my day !!
  • The best software for mindmapping, not only for learning, filters are very useful to connect ideas and see how different things are related, Also the fact that images can be saved in a directory make the mindmap fast and pleasant to use.
  • Great and fully featured software. I highly recommend freeplane for any mindmapping needs.
  • It is amazing and I think the UI is easy to use and good looking enough. I can't complain.
  • It's absolutely an excellent program. But I expect the GUI to be more modern and elegant. The currently used GUI remind me of the Microsoft Office 2003. I believe a good appearance will make Freeplane far more popular.

  • Freeplane is just great, one of the best Open Source projects, and as a Mind Mapping tool, it is on par or even better than commercial software. I use it on Linux and Mac, and it works great in both operating systems.

  • I use this software everyday for work and personal projets and notes. It is a really usefull and practical software for mindmapping that really need more developers to look and build nice enhancements and addons. PS: and contrary to the very bad review about GNU/Linux, FP is easylly installable on GNU/Linux. I use it with the same maps and fonctionnalities on both platforms windows and GNU/Linux. Don't use your distribution packages but the zip file of the latest version from sourceforge. 2020/02
  • Uzun zamandır kullanıyorum. Çok aradım ama henüz daha iyisini bulamadım.
  • It's a pleasure to open this piece of free software each morning again. Thank you for all the work done! :-)
  • An excellent piece of free software. Some aspects are a bit clunky, but I am still rating 5 stars because of the breadth of the project.
  • It's an excelent software to organize the topics of subjects that I'm studying!

  • A really great mind mapping program, I use it daily. Thanks a lot to the developpers, I hope this project will stay alive and updated as it is the best mind mapping program i have found so far. However I use it both on Windows and Linux (Mint) platforms and it is quite slow on Linux to move around the map, not too sure why...
[EN] I use Freeplane for note taking and ideas management. This is the best software I have found for these purposes, according to my tastes: - Fast and easy to use every day; - When I miss some functionnality I can add it myself, thanks to the excellent customization possibilities (scripts and addons); - Free software. Congratulation and many thanks to the developpers, this tool has became essential to me.
  • It acually works. Have some advanced functions compared to FreeMind and it is still active. It has many functions and it is growing. The Add-On function works flawless. The interfase is nice with many useful icons. I find a bit confusing the Menus since some functions are in a menu you wouldn't expect. The Style Configuration for nodes is superb. The best I have tried. Adding images to the nodes works out of the box with a simple drag-and drop. The HTML editor is minimalist and handy. The connector tool is powerful (after one learn how to use it). The Icons for nodes are a nice plus. LaTex integration is acceptable and it does its job of allowing some simple equations. I still cannot use amsmath package functions. Keyboard shortcut customisation is fantastic. It is a shame that not every sotware allows keyboard shortcut customisation as Freeplane does. Though I haven't tried the Filter and Scripts features, they look promising. It can become sluggish when there are many images. It tries to impose the automatic layout of nodes limiting freedome of nodes positioning. For instance, I haven't been able to position 4 nodes one to each other as it were the row of a table without resorting to Free Node Mode (in which one loss tha ability of automatic redrawing nodes position). For some unknown reason, it cannot accept images inside tables (even after modifying the HTML code). I strongly recommend Freeplane for people in academia and research positions, professors, PhD students and alike. Being for a literature review, a conceptual map or ideas Freeplane does it job.
