Absolutely grandiose: while it is not the most comprehensive mathematical engine around, it's the best you can get for free. Neat job folks!

Very interesting alternative to replace basic Matlab: light, free and able to make graphic.

Worked for all of my Coursera (Everything Is The Same) MATLAB homework problems. I didn't use it during the course, but I tested all of my required MATLAB scripts with FreeMat. There were some variants of MATLAB functions that aren't compatible, and I found one MATLAB function that isn't supported in FreeMat, but none of these exceptions were required for the course. Another important plus is that you don't have to jump through so many hoops to install FreeMat, as you do with Octave. FreeMat is free, easy to install and use, and is compatible enough for everything that I've needed thus far.
