Forager is a suite of software originally developed as a teaching tool for graduate students enrolled in a doctoral program in Cognitive Science at The University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Students were required to develop skills in computational simulation methods as part of their program. This software is designed to facilitate this, even for students with relatively little computational experience and sophistication. Forager is designed to run under both MATLAB and Octave (see below).
The educational goal helped shape the software in a number of ways. First, the code is easily readable, as it is stored in a plain text format. Second, the code is also heavily commented upon, hopefully to make understanding it relatively straightforward. Third, the code has been written with an eye to comprehensibility. Occasionally, this means not exploiting the most efficient methods available in MATLAB and Octave. Fourth, variable names and file names have been chosen to make their use and funct
