Wireless sensor network protocols and applications are usually first evaluated through simulation, and then are tested on stationary indoor testbeds before proceeding to the actual deployment.

Unfortunately, there is a huge gap between indoor testing on a backchannel-assisted stationary testbed and a real-world deployment.

To narrow this gap, we propose FLEXOR, a software architecture that supports the development and testing of stationary and mobile modular sensor network applications and protocols with no backchannel support.

Any sensor network application is viewed as a combination of various modules, each of which provides a solution for a basic protocol or service. FLEXOR enables the flexible exchange of modules at run-time so that different combinations of modules can be tested out and compared in a realistic deployment setting.

Furthermore, FLEXOR is platform-independent and thus enables code portability for various platforms,from simulators to embedded operating systems.
