  • File Order Randomizer is brilliant in its simplicity and, like another reviewer before me, I created an account to give thanks. I just randomized 4,436 MP3 files to play on an inexpensive mini stereo receiver with USB input. Listening to the results as I write this, I feel obliged to give others a hint that would've saved loads of time. *Warning: file under ‘Captain Obvious’ for more experienced users.* Initially I tried randomizing the MP3’s on the USB drive itself. However, the speed of processing files on a USB can’t begin to compare with the same function performed on a computer’s hard drive. If, like me, your files are already on a USB, take the time to transfer those files into a dedicated folder on your computer before doing anything else. Once randomizing is complete, wipe the original files from the USB drive and transfer the files from your computer back to the USB. Enjoy! In my case, I processed 4,436 MP3's in about an hour and a half, maybe less –a fraction of the time it would have taken to complete on my USB 3.1. And finally, I owe a big THANK YOU to lumpiluk –you’re my hero!
  • Could be better. If you have files with numbers at the beginning (because you randomised them earlier) and files without a number (because you added them later), then the software cannot handle that: you can add random numbers again, but then there will be file names with more digits in the name than the others, or you can delete the first characters for every file, but it actually deletes part of the name of the files without numbers, because the app cannot differentiate between numbers and letters. Also, there is no undo function, so I have the correct my file names manually now.
  • I was testing a small program (RandomFileOrder.exe) to randomize filenames for playing mp3-songs in random order. Seems an easy task. The program worked well until it came across a file not shown in explorer with a name like "Albumart_{B5020207-474E-D115-292…}_Small.jpg". These files are show in the programs interface but not in explorer. There it stopped and caused a mess because only one half of the directory was renamed. How to avoid that or can someone recommend a program without such a drawback? Features I missed: include subdirectories, rename groups of selected files, define position of some files...

  • Made an account solely to recommend this. Not only can it add random numbers, but it can also easily remove them for you with ease.
  • Great app, I've updated it so it uses sequential numbers instead of just random and so you can choose the format of the naming. You can find the updated version on github (github.com/depuits/RandomFileOrder)
  • This software worked perfectly and did just what I wanted. Thank you
