Debian 9 mate is based on debian 9 stretch (debian stable branch), and uses debian repositories for all packages installed (Except with a notable exception for this release regarding flash; see "notes" below). It is equipped with the mate desktop environment (mate 1.20.1). There are 32 and 64bit versions available. THIS IS A BUG FIX RELEASE This release now includes tigervnc making xrdp capable of being an rdp server that works out of the box; as opposed to not working at all in 20180711. I have no idea why debian's xrdp package maintainer changed the package list of recommended packages to exclude a vital piece. Debian mate 20160505 was the last release. ======================================================================== MD5 ======================================================================== debian9_mate_amd64_20180725 md5: 825c4403413b048093b5908cb81f185d debian9_mate_i386_20180725 md5: 53369bf6d6e04058994542b58ae8c058 ======================================================================== SETUP ======================================================================== LIVE SESSION Password for the live session is live. UFW FIREWALL Ufw is enabled and denies incoming and allows outgoing traffic. PROGRAMS AND PORTS YOU MAY WANT TO ALLOW THROUGH THE FIREWALL: Xrdp remote desktop protocol server: 3389/tcp Samba network file sharing: 137/udp, 138/udp, 139/tcp, 445/tcp Openvpn ssl/tls vpn: 1194/udp ======================================================================== NOTES ======================================================================== NETWORK-MANAGER Network-manager is managing the network interfaces. VIRTUAL KEYBOARD The lock screen will automatically pull up a virtual keyboard when you wish to unlock your session (this change was made out of potential emergency and device type). I switched out the virtual keyboard "florence" in favor of "onboard" for touch interfaces and your mouse when you otherwise don't have a keyboard. But keep in mind, the lock screen is the only thing that I automated for displaying the virtual keyboard; aside from the lock screen, for desktop use you will need to open onboard from the "universal access" category of the main menu. XSERVER-XORG-LEGACY Package "xserver-xorg-legacy" is not present as this prevented xrdp from showing a remote desktop (Only mentioned for the extreme few who might need this package, and that is unlikely). FLASH Package flashplugin-nonfree is broken in the testing and unstable branches; therefore debian didn't want to include a broken package in the stable branch. I worked around the problem by installing MX linux's (Debian 9 stretch based distribution) flash package which installed flash just fine. That way flash can be uninstalled easily by using APT or synaptic if it is truly undesirable. This package is found here: http://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/non-free/a/adobe-flashplugin/ GTK3 As of mate 1.14 (This distribution has 1.20.1), the desktop environment is now based on the gtk3 tool kit. Gtk3 and mate are both awesome; mate is superb and needed to modernize by deprecating gtk2. The only down side is mate built with gtk3 eats more memory; it is noticeable, but not that bad...this distribution will run fine with a minimum of 512 megabytes of ram. DEBIAN INSTALLER If the debian installer complains about missing "brcm/bcm43xx-0.fw" or "rtl_nic/rtl8168e-2.fw", just realize this is a load of crap since these firmware are included. If you have hardware that uses these firmwares, you probably noted that the devices are working if you booted to the live session or after you install. RELEASE AND PROJECT NAMING I changed the release naming to include the version of debian stable a release is based on. This was to deal with the differentiation of many of other similarly named linux distributions, and for people to readily observe how current the project and current release are from name alone. This is still "debian mate" as how I intended. ======================================================================== PACKAGE LIST ======================================================================== Here's all of the packages I used to make up debian 9 mate. task-ssh-server task-laptop task-print-server xorg kmod laptop-mode-tools cryptsetup live-config systemd tor firmware-linux-nonfree firmware-misc-nonfree firmware-realtek firmware-atheros firmware-iwlwifi firmware-brcm80211 firmware-b43-installer lightdm numlockx mate-desktop-environment-core caja caja-extensions-common dconf-editor caja-open-terminal mate-user-share mate-applets mate-settings-daemon mate-utils mate-control-center mate-notification-daemon gnome-system-tools mate-screensaver mate-power-manager mate-system-monitor ufw openvpn network-manager-gnome samba hardinfo pavucontrol leafpad firefox-esr libreoffice-calc libreoffice-writer vlc gimp atril pidgin deluge gparted gdebi brasero engrampa galculator gpicview gksu synaptic xsane system-config-printer grub-pc frozen-bubble chromium-bsu quadrapassel gweled audacity xrdp extlinux onboard syslinux mtools bridge-utils live-build exfat-utils exfat-fuse tigervnc-standalone-server adobe-flashplugin (from MX linux 17 repositories; more mentioned in "notes" above)
