This is a bugfix release that fixes various compile issues.

While fixing a broken build image, it turned out that googlemock/googletest
has undergone some changes, so that downloads that the Makefile is built around
no longer exist. As a consequence, the default Makefile configuration and
documentation made no sense any longer, and has been updated to work with the
latest googletest version. Along the way, some other potential compilation
issues have been resolved.
