ClipTray

It's weird - I have been using this app over a decade and rely on it heavily. And I also like it. But I have responded with low marks when rating it because well.... it sort of sucks. It is a very simple, no frills clip board helper. That's what I need but it lacks the most basic stuff: 1. There is no support in that the documentation it comes with is slim and the web that Source Forge lists (a sub-web here) isn't there. Poor support. 2. My version, 1.61, obtained here, uses a file named 'personal.dat' to hold default clips. This file can't be edited in any way I've been able to discover, to change/update entries. Poor ease of use and lack of features. 3. It is stubborn about what it believes to be in the clipboard. If you use the app to select a clip and then happen to copy text somewhere in the course of general stuff, that copied text goes to the clipboard. But the app thinks the last text that you selected via the app is still in the clipboard. If you happen to need that clip, you are unable to select it directly. You must first select some other clip and then select the former text that you want to use. Bad design. This is crazy weird though. I have a good number of clips that i use every day. When I need to update a clip, I have to manually copy each clip I'm using to the clipboard and save them. Every entry. All just to edit one clip. I can edit the .dat file using Notepad++ as long as my edits do not change the length of the pre-edited clip. What is crazy is that I have seen references in multiple places on the web saying that clips are stored in a .txt file which can be edited. I have downloaded the most recent version from multiple places including Source Forge. They are all identical and they all store their clips in 'personal.dat'. I must be in error somewhere and hope to be corrected. This single problem is making an otherwise simple but potentially very handy app miss out when it comes to: Features (no way to edit), Design (same reason), Ease of Use (not easy if you need to continually re-create your clips just for one edit). Support? We'll see. At minimum, the non-working "Cliptray website" reference should be removed. But really, aside from all that, it's been a great app that has received daily use from me for over 10 years.
