cert-manager is the easiest way to automatically manage certificates in Kubernetes and OpenShift clusters.

v1.20.5 removes trust in the compromised eMudhra CA (see eMudhra Compromise). The base images move to Debian 13, which no longer includes the "emSign ECC Root CA - G3" root certificate. Go 1.26.10 also makes crypto/x509 reject certificate chains that pass through the compromised intermediates (CVE-2026-111943).

It also updates Go and several dependencies to fix reported security vulnerabilities, including five in HTTP/2 that govulncheck reported as reachable in v1.20.4.

All users should upgrade.

Building cert-manager 1.20 from source now needs Go 1.26

The HTTP/2 fixes are in golang.org/x/net v0.60.0 and later, which need Go language version 1.26. So the go directive in cert-manager's go.mod files is now 1.26. This only affects you if you build cert-manager 1.20 from source or import it as a Go module.

This change does not affect the released binaries. They were already built with Go 1.26, and they keep the same Go runtime (GODEBUG) defaults as v1.20.4.

Security scanner findings

v1.20.5 fixes the two golang.org/x/crypto/ssh findings listed for v1.20.4, by updating golang.org/x/crypto to v0.57.0.

Scanners still report GO-2026-5932, which marks golang.org/x/crypto/openpgp as unmaintained. cert-manager does not import that package and there is no fixed version.

Changes by Kind

Other (Cleanup or Flake)

  • Update the base images to Debian 13, which no longer trusts the "emSign ECC Root CA - G3" and "AAA Certificate Services" roots after the eMudhra intermediate CA compromise (#9511, @wallrj-cyberark; [#9523])
  • Update Go to 1.26.10, fixing CVEs in the crypto/tls, crypto/x509, net/http, net/textproto, mime/multipart and html/template packages (#9503, @wallrj-cyberark)
