############################################################################## # CASTANET Mobile Ad-hoc Network Deployment Platform # ############################################################################## http://sourceforge.net/p/castanet/home/ Castanet is a bootable linux system for the deploying ad-hoc mesh networks. Built on Ubuntu 10.04.1, it employs the batman_adv implementation of the B.A.T.M.A.N. routing protocol in form of a linux kernel module operating on layer 2 See http://www.open-mesh.org/wiki/batman-adv The system is intended to be as automatic and user friendly as possible while supporting a wide a variety of hardware as possible. One potential use is the quick deployment of an emergency communication system in disaster situations. To this end the system boot in one of three boot time selectable modes, auto IP configuration, gateway mode, and dhclient mode. Modes can be switched after bootup by using the 'sudo meshsetup' command in a terminal. The ekiga softphone is included. Though a bit of a heavyweight it was chosen for it's ease of use. After entering the users name in the setup wizard it will apear in the "Neighbors" pane of other hosts running ekiga on the mesh. As shipped CASTANET has no user password set and can use sudo without entering a password. Obviously convienience and not security was the prime factor in choosing this configuration. Ubuntu's usb boot disk creator (included) can be used to install to a usb thumb drive with persistant storage of user and configuration settings. If you try CASTANET I would be pleased if you would help improve it by reporting your experience, including what hardware workes or doesn't.
