Ashington OS

The Comeback OS, your PC’s plan B.

Ashington OS is a live USB workspace for using a PC when Windows will not start, copying readable files to another drive, browsing the web, opening supported documents through UR Viewer Web, and connecting to another PC.

Downloads

Download the complete Ashington OS package. It contains ASHINGTON.bin, the tested Ashington OS ISO, the complete Windows-visible folder, Ashington USB Creator, instructions, and checksums.

Easy setup: use ASHINGTON.bin and Ashington USB Creator.exe from the complete package. The image includes Ashington OS and the Windows-visible files. Creates an approximately 4 GB USB layout. Additional space on larger USB drives remains unused.

Getting started

Create the USB using the published BIN and USB Creator workflow. Restart the PC, open its startup Boot Menu and select the USB. See the boot guide.

Keep the boot USB connected until shutdown. Save files you need on a separate writable drive; files in the live session may be lost at restart.

What you can do

  • Recover Files: copy readable files from a source opened read-only.
  • Open Files: open UR Viewer Web and select a supported file locally.
  • Browse Web: connect to the network and open a browser.
  • Connect to Another PC: use a configured, reachable Windows RDP host.
  • Help & Documentation: read the guide when the separate help files exist.

Recovery does not bypass encryption and does not guarantee recovery from damaged hardware, deleted files or overwritten data. DOCX and XLSX viewing is not supported by the recorded Ashington Open Files workflow.

Documentation and support

See docs/USER-GUIDE.md, docs/FAQ.md and docs/TROUBLESHOOTING.md. Developers: read docs/building.md and docs/SOURCE-AND-LICENSES.md.

Release metadata

Version: 0.1. Build target: Debian 13 (trixie), amd64, KDE/Dolphin. The source defaults to the standard variant; use the explicit KDE build command in docs/building.md. Exact installed package versions, ISO hash and tested boot modes must be recorded from the selected release artifact.

The release owner reported that the published media workflows passed physical USB creation, Windows readability, safe eject and reconnect without a Format prompt, and Legacy BIOS and UEFI booting. The previously rejected combined image remains withdrawn and is not a release download. See docs/RELEASE-STATUS.md for release evidence.
