As previously stated, this patch is lightly tested, but perhaps promising.

    A patch against the 2.4.0 release tarball, Linux only (sorry)
    - improved jack audio/midi, Zyn uses the samplerate and buffer size reported by jack
    - alsa audio
    - build with multiple options, select at runtime with command line params or settings

    $ ./zynaddsubfx -h
    Usage: zynaddsubfx [option(s) ...]
    -h, --help display command-line help and exit
    -l<file>, --load=<file> load an .xmz file
    -L<file>, --load-instrument=<file> load an .xiz file
    -r<SR>, --sample-rate=<SR> set the sample rate SR
    -b<BS>, --buffer-size=<BS> set the buffer size (granularity)
    -o<OS>, --oscil-size=<OS> set the ADsynth oscil. size
    -S , --swap swap Left <--> Right
    -s , --sequencer run sequencer (default is no sequencer)
    -D , --dump dump midi note ON/OFF commands
    -U , --no-gui run ZynAddSubFX without user interface
    -a[dev], --alsa-midi[=dev] use ALSA midi on optional device dev
    -A[dev], --alsa-audio[=dev] use ALSA audio on optional device dev
    -j[server], --jack-midi[=server] use jack midi on optional server
    -z, --no-audio no audio
    -J[server], --jack-audio[=server] use jack audio on optional server
    -k , --autostart-jack autostart jack server
    -O[dsp], --oss-audio[=dsp] use OSS audio on optional dsp
    -p, --priority thread priority, 0..75
    -q, --quiet less verbose messages
