To start with let me say this. I am in no way whatsoever qualified to answer this question. which distribution are you using? Is it one you have used for a while? do you use some non-standard keymap? do you have a wierd keyboard? (i.e. any extra buttons). on a side note... MAME is open source You can prolly change which keys control the start buttons.
