No

Several folks have asked for a "file loading" message
that would appear while Zplet is loading. I think that
permitting the HTML author to personalize or
deactivate this feature via a parameter tag would be
extremely helpful.

I can't seem to get the screen to paint itself before the
ZMachine starts. I've tried adding a label (Don't know what
this never painted itself.), Tried overriding the applets
paint method (ZScreen covers it I think?) And tried adding
text to the ZScreen (get's cleared before it prints I think?)

Anyway I've havn't been successfull geting any low level
messages to show as of yet. Any Ideas? Perhaps a popup
dialog box? Or maybe the loading process needs to be
    multi-threaded.

Also Perhaps I was able to show a message bt the game took
over as it loaded faster then the applet could render hence
defeting the purpose of the message. I don't have a dial-up
so I've yet to experiance slow down while loading. Local
tests are pointless since it loading right off the drive. Ideas?

I'm marking this as loest priority till I get more feedback
    or ideas.

Would it be a terrible kludge to create an outer panel that
does nothing but print a message and then load the z
machine? My knowledge of Java is, sadly, about four years
    old!

Do you have your applet posted somewhere so I can try it
over my slow modem, so see whether in fact the "problem" is
that you aren't experiencing the delays that make the
    feature desirable.
