Tried the new 0.2.20 release and the support for wss (via v4l2 video, not vbi lines) does not work any more. The example wss file (old wss test file) doens't work. Error: "Cannot decod= e wss" is given, with 0.2.19 still works perfectly. System has Pinnacle PCTV 40i card that works fine for everything else. What could be up? |

Hi guys I am so frustrated with making my device work with some help of zapping. I think almost everything is OK . My device,cx2388x chipset, has support for v4l, v4l2, xvideo etc Other programs ,such as tvtime, kdetv, are working fine except for this. Others also have some bugs though. What I figured ou is as follows: zapping alsway uses the driver of v4l not v4l2 but my device, cx2388x, uses v4l2. I tryed to chage the configuration for the controlbler but failed. Isn't there any way to do that ? I tried compiling with some options but in vain. I have no patience any more and am tired of doing this. If anybody knows, let me know some way around or tips. It would be really appreciated. Taeseon ps) my os : fedora core 5 tv tuner and decoder : local barnd using cx2388x chipset |

Did you recently upgrade, and zvbi-ntsc-cc worked before? I couldn't test this combination in 0.2.19 but it worked a few months ago and I'm not aware of changes possibly causing this. Or did you upgrade the kernel or V4L2 driver? Could you create a sample for me? Please download the libzvbi source code, ./configure && make as usual, then tune to a garbled station, run for ten seconds test/capture -v --sliced >sample 2>log and send me the log and sample file. I've been using zvbi-ntsc-cc to watch/capture cc's, but today all the output is garbled. Some stations are more garbled than others, and some are putting "<ATTRIBUTE 24 46>" or similar in the output. zvbi-ntsc-cc had worked flawlessly for awhile now, so I thought it might be a signal quality issue. So, I took the cable from my machine and ran it to a nearby TV which showed them just fine. The machine isn't running X and is headless, so I can't check the picture/signal quality with a viewer. Sorry. Anyone had any similar issues? Card: Hauppauge WinTV-PCI Model 190 ZVBI: 0.2.19 |

The data is probably in V4L2 sliced VBI format (http://v4l2spec.bytesex.org/spec/x4610.htm) and on top of that still contains multiple data streams (different languages, station name etc) and various control codes. You need a caption decoder to get bare ASCII. > but I am wondering if we could use one of the "testing" scripts for > the zapping api to export the close caption text into the database? I've had some measure of luck with xawtv in the past, but that's always a very touchy prog to work with (at least it is for me). > Librte is a dead end. Hello, all. I've been looking around for awhile now for a program which I can use to convert a bunch of my old VHS tapes to some kind of digital format, and it'd be especially nice to be able to convert them to a DVD. Zapping looks very nice, and so far it's been the best of the bunch that I've tried, but I'm a bit curious if it's possible to get more options out of its ffmpeg backend, specifically with an eye to creating the DVDs that I had mentioned. From what I understand, the best video format to use would be mpeg-2 (which looks like it's supported with "mpeg2video" via my ffmpeg), and then AC3 sound (or PCM or whatever). Zapping seems to only give me options for MPEG-1 or MPEG-4, depending on my container type, and I seem to be perpetually bound to mp3 for the audio source unless I choose AC3 for the container type as well, in which case I'd have to re-multiplex the sound with the video later. I'd rather avoid multiplexing if possible, since because this is being sourced from VHS, synchronization issues wouldn't be that fun. I've been digging around the source trees for Zapping and RTE (I'm not sure exactly what gets defined where) without much luck, so I figured I'd ask here before I spent more time on it. Is something like this possible? Is it something that'd be relatively trivial to add given a few extra options in the ffmpeg backend? Thanks for any input you may have! -CJ -- WOW: Kakistocracy | "Happiness isn't good enough for me! I za...@ap... | demand euphoria!" apocalyptech.com/music/ | - Calvin |

After having looked for an TV - Application I think zapping is best suited to my purposes. I've got the actual sources and installed them upon my mandriva 2006 system. After all the picture and tone are good. The remaining problem is the recording which does not work. Starting zapping from a console the following error message occurs ** (zapping:27184): WARNING **: Failed to load plugin: librte.so.1: Kann die Shared-Object-Datei nicht \xf6ffnen: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden However rte-0.5.6 was sucessfully made and installed. I found it at http://search.cpan.org/search?query=XML::Simple Actually you shouldn't need Perl at all, because it's only used to rebuild some source files, and make is not supposed to do that. I'll see what I can do. For now please untar 0.2.17 afresh and type this: cd zvbi-0.2.17 sed s/\\.h:/xx:/ <src/Makefile.in >t mv t src/Makefile.in ./configure --prefix=/usr make sudo make install Michael |

Since my post yesterday asking for help on why zapping did not recognise that vbi was installed, I have tried many things to fix this. I eventually got zapping to see vbi if I configured vbi to install in /usr, instead of its' default. ie. ./configure --prefix=/usr But that only works on zvbi-0.2.9 , I could not get zvbi-0.2.17 to make. I tracked down the error to loading a perl module 'XML/Simple.pm' not being installed on my machine. My question is, Is this a default module for perl in the latest OS, or will I need to install it on my upgrade. I am running perl-5.8.4. As for running zvbi-0.2.9, it is a waste of time for me, I keep getting errors:- Using video device '/dev/video0', display ':1.0', screen 0. Querying frame buffer parameters from X server. DMA not possible on screen 0. Setup failed. Try -vv for details. And when I run zapping -vv it makes no difference, there is no 'extra' debugging output. Maybe I should compile zapping with debugging support when I do get zvbi-0.2.17 installed. Gazza. |

I'd like a section on every distro and driver in the Zapping docs but I can't try many software and hardware configurations myself. A V4L2 HowTo combining all the info floating around the 'net would also be nice. Or more about driver installation and troubleshooting on http://linuxtv.org/v4lwiki/ My hope is that one day distros take care of hardware probing, load the appropriate precompiled drivers, provide Zapping binaries, and Zapping works out of the box for most users without going through docs or preferences first. > I've made a very rough draft at > http://members.dodo.net.au/~featherball/Zapping/Zapping_a_Little_Help_For_Newbies.html > What I will point out is a few modules that need to be loaded for > zapping to work. There's a Perl script generating the src/network_table.h file from an online XML file. I always include generated sources in tarballs, so you shouldn't have any problems. Can you reproduce this? I just tried 0.2.17 and none of the generated sources were rebuilt by make. > To compile I found that I had to configure it into /usr instead of > its' default directory, because for some reason zapping did not see it > in /usr/local. At build time that may happen because zvbi-0.2.pc is not in the search path of "pkg-config --modversion zvbi-0.2". Adding /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable should help. At runtime it may happen because the dynamic linker can't find libzvbi.so. You could add /usr/local/lib to LD_LIBRARY_PATH or /etc/ld.so.conf, see man ld.so. Changing the --prefix is ok when you remember to do it every time. Otherwise you may end up with different versions in different directories and ./configure may use the wrong one. > At the moment I keep getting the following error when I try vbi :- > > Using video device '/dev/video0', display ':1.0', screen 0. > Querying frame buffer parameters from X server. > DMA not possible on screen 0. > Setup failed. Perhaps dga and v4l are incompatible with 2D and/or 3D graphics acceleration. If so, overlay is impossible. It's a pity but unless you have a very slow or power constrained machine you aren't losing much. > First I ask for official backing. I would really appreciate your help. There's a lot you could do besides coding. Michael |

Sorry for my last post, I feel like a complete dickhead. I've been trying to get half a dozen other things working, lirc being one of them. In my last post I wanted to make a HowTo for Zapping, yet the page I wrote was half lirc problems. So it is obvious that if anyone did read it, they would have put me in the nut house category. I've also realised this is for real programers, not lame users, So I think it best that I unsubscribe and leave the experts in peace. One last note, I did finally get teletext working, for some reason when I first downloaded zapping the pages lead me to version 0.9.6 , yet today when I looked, I found 0.9.7cvs3 and sourceforge said this was made in August. So I screwed up again. Thanks for a great program, and I'll leave you in peace. Gazza. |
