Just another idea...what if bouncers passed straight through ships? This would distinguish them further from phasers and make them much more useful in bit bashes, nexus, and rabbit games. You really need something more than a minute range enhancement and (minimally useful) bouncing to justify the increased energy cost. I think the option of ship penetration would make bouncers a viable loadout choice without completely outmoding phasers.
(Imagine rabbit games where there are five people in front of you chasing the person with the flag...or five people chasing you while you have the flag!)
Ummm.... not sure I get this... would they damage ships on the way through? So you could potentially damage multiple ships with one shot?
That's the idea. They offer penetration as an added bonus. Shields would still cause deflection, though. Without any enemies equipping shields, the bouncers could pass through and damage ships within their range. If you really wanted to get complicated, you could reduce the amount of damage after each ship. So if three ships were in a row chasing someone with bouncers and the bouncer player sent a line through all three, the first ship would get hit with 100% of the weapon's potential damage, the second ship with 50%, the third with 25%...something like that. Of course, all that's not completely necessary, but the general idea of a weapon with penetration would add appeal to what's currently pretty lackluster.
