I been toying with C# for nearly 2 years now, though I would hardly consider myself fluent with the language, I'm more a hobbiest that has been devoting a large proportion of time to computers without having done much studies, which I feel are for the most part fairly irrelevant for what I do with computers. I have recently been thinking of starting a large scale project - one which I intend to deliver via web browsers. I gave a lot of thought to it, and would like to write my own forum to this end, perhaps later a wiki to complement what I have planned. Without going into to much detail on what I am trying to do (mostly irrelevant to the reason I am posting) I would like to ask a few things about legal issues and licensing of the yafdotnet project. Being fairly new to ASP.NET, I think writing my own forum is going to be a mammoth task in itself, and am left wondering, if I base my work - possibly heavily on Y.A.F. - what license issues will I have to respect? I'm not talking about cut/copy/paste here, more a heavy paraphrasing of the Y.A.F. forum with possibly a few specific changes to suit my needs. The key issue here is that I'm not trying to run off with Y.A.F. code, more trying to ease myself into unfamiliar territory (ASP.NET) by rewriting this project in my own words - in the hope some of the original coders wisdom rubs off on me. I will add - that atm - I am not planning on making my final project commercial - and that the finished product will be much more than a forum (hopefully a fairly good real-time-strategy game) when it is finished. But in the same token, I do not want to open my own source up to the GPL license. To be honest, I have not really considered legal issues for my project yet, and feel I need to study much more before I make a better, more informed decision on that issue. So in short, via the Y.A.F. license agreements, is writing my own forum based on Y.A.F. ok? Who do I ask for specific permision to do this? Will I be required to place a Y.A.F. logo on my finished forum software along the lines of Based on Y.A.F? Thanx to you all for any advice on this issue, and certainly nice to have found a fairly good (and apparently fairly robust) ASP.NET forum. Dan |
