Apache 1.3.27, Timeout is 1000 sec
Php 4.3.2, scriptexecutiontime 900 sec, 20 mb
file_post_size, 21 mb post_size
yabbse 1.5.4: max file post size: 11240 kb, max overall
size 1 gb.

a 580 byte upload works, 800 k byte works, 1000 k byte
works, 1500 k byte doesn't work, 2270 k byte also won't
work. Even when I only need 2:45 (=165 sec for upload)

This is probably an apache problem. Take a look in your
php.conf in your apache conf.d directory. Crank up the
LimitRequestBody value to what you want.

The problem is in your PHP and/or server configuration.
YaBB SE does its best to attach the file PHP gives it, and
only says it fails if PHP gives it none.

    Thank you,
