Subject: Bug#135867: xxdiff: can't really compare UTF-8
Package: xxdiff
Version: 1:2.0.3-1
Severity: normal
XxDiff comparing UTF-8 files is not pretty, as it treats them like
ISO-8859 instead, thus showing weird character combinations. Selecting a
font in ISO-10646-1 doesn't seem to help.

ooola... me, new-world dummy... i know latin1, but never
used UTF-8, whatever it is, i guess i'll have to educate
myself a bit now and find out how to generate one of those
problematic beasties...

QUESTION: can diff treat UTF-8 files? if not, then i
won't be able to help, since xxdiff uses diff to perform
the actual diff computation.
or perhaps is there a UTF-8 enabled version of diff? if
so, then xxdiff can be configure to use that, IF that diff
program outputs POSIX diff format.

i'm moving this to requested features (i don't have any
plans or time to do anytime soon though)
Meanwhile in 2012 I hope you have gained some experience with UTF-8. The normal diff and most other applications can handle this and most systems work with UTF-8 at the moment. Please convert this back from feature request to bug report and fix this soon to prevent of loosing too many users. I think xxdiff is a great application and UTF-8 support would suit it nicely.
