It did a bit better. I decided that your answer might work well, but it was too complicated when I wasn't really disabled. I can run Dragon 12 under Windows 7 as a Virtualbox guest, but it means that in effect, I am running Windows. I can run my death indexing program under Crossover and ReactOS. The pull-down calendars work, but don't display the result. In addition, "spinner" action doesn't work. I need to pull the month down for each entry. The other possibility is a free voice recognition program running inside Google Chrome. I found it quite accurate, but went back to the keyboard. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/voice-recognition/ Google are looking for beta testers for an app equivalent to Dragon, but they really want volume users. No doubt there will be a cost for the released program. Philips have been advertising a proprietary product. It probably needs Windows. Doug. |

...read the instructions. Firstly, we have a new registration. Welcome Chris. If you are looking for a chat, you have come to the wrong place. Otherwise, tell us what brings you here. From somewhere, sometime, I downloaded a voice recognition extension for OpenOffice and LibreOffice (also BrOffice - it comes from Brazil.) Adding it to Linux seemed to do nothing, so I tried Windows. Windows wanted the path to the Julius speech engine, http://julius.osdn.jp/en_index.php So I read the instructions. It is alpha, from Google Code. It works only under Linux, and provides a dictation pad. It recommends the VoxForge project, which includes a copy of Julius in the download. I have a recent download of VoxForge on hand, so I am about to try it out. If it shows any promise, I will look for an update. VoxForge has a very basic voice model. I was wrong about the fix. "autoaudiosrc" works only in GNOME. for
other DE's, it needs to be replaced by alsarc or ossrc. I chose
alsarc. Everything works, but there is no output to the dictation pad.
Things to try: disable Pulse when launching FreeSpeech.
Try ossrc.

FreeSpeech seems to be the most practical type of voice recognition for
Linux. Its accuracy is woeful, but can be improved.
One problem I found, and which seemed to be insurmountable, was the
error message:
./freespeech.py
** Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GstObject)
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "./freespeech.py", line 690, in <module>
app = freespeech()
File "./freespeech.py", line 78, in __init__
self.init_gst()
File "./freespeech.py", line 249, in init_gst
+ '! pocketsphinx name=asr ! fakesink')
glib.GError: no element "autoaudiosrc"
I have no knowledge of writing Python, but I decided to get rid of
"autoaudiosrc" as follows:
For "gst.parse_launch('autoaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample"
Substitute: "gst.parse_launch('audioconvert ! audioresample"
The rest of the line is untouched. Maybe not legit, but it works!

Makes me feel guilty I never bothered finishing my plans for running linux ViaVoice in a vm/chroot and X11ing to the main X server. It may be worth suggesting to firewall the X port to only permit connections from the VM seeing as you need to open it for network rather than socket connections. I wrote a new system to allow me to run NaturallySpeaking in a virtual machine under Linux and get my NaturallySpeaking keystrokes sent to X windows on the host. It's in rather preliminary form, but I'm using it as my regular dictation system and I have disconnected the Windows machine that I used to use as a front end for this purpose. If you have an Android tablet or phone they have good accessability options for voice control and dictation, but they're not about getting dictated text working on Linux (unless you count android as Linux) so I don't know if it's worth mentioning more about that My RSI cleared up significantly after I started taking sensible breaks from typing, so I've not really a need for dictation myself, but Google's voice support is extremely good even with no training. One day... maybe when I retire, I'll have time to get a chrooted VV environment that'll work for anyone on any distribution and regain Xvoice X11 window management support, until then I'd recommend wine or google docs. - Damion |

Dragon 12 still works under Windows 7, but under Linux with Crossover Office, it crashes immediately with an obscure DLL fault. I may switch to my wife's laptop, which needs Dragon 13. Had some early success with the Vooxforge kit, but recently, it can't hear the mic. Just tried FreeSpeech again. Everything installed, but no output. pavucontrol shows that the mic. output is always flat out, and increases as the top limit is raised. |

The quick help card says that you can still use "Spell That." Do you
mean the ICAO phonetic alphabet?
Yes, in particular as part of a single utterance mixed with regular
words.

It uses Gecko, which couldn't handle the Web-style sidebar, so I disabled that in Windows, and copied my profile across. The menu bar went right across the middle of my screen, so I changed to the short bar, which I could move about. Pulse Audio told me I could have the microphone on my Webcam or nothing, so I unplugged the Webcam. "Spell that" does seem to have gone, even when in the correction box. You have to type the correction, or choose an alternative. That is probably good enough for ordinary business users. I can put up with it, because my only disability is co-ordination. I am running Windows 7, which is the last Windows to support NS 12. It refused to install on my wife's laptop with Win 8.1. |

I'm running Dragon 13 Premium right now but getting something running
on Linux is a long held dream as you know ;)
I'm all ears to hear what might be likely to work.
I'm using NaturallySpeaking 12 under WINE with a modified version of
platypus, on a regular basis. It works, but you have to put up with
rather a lot of flakiness. I'm wondering whether it might be better to
run NaturallySpeaking under real Windows in a VM. This assumes that
your goal is getting something done with a single piece of hardware,
rather than, say, avoiding commercial software.
Did Nuance by any chance put back in 13 the phonetic-alphabet dictation
that they removed in 12? I was going to implement this in platypus, but
I don't think it could ever be as good as actually having it in
NaturallySpeaking.
