How can I increase capture performance

xvidcap looks really promising, but I can only record small areas of the screen before I start dropping frames. The max seems to be around 530x260@15 fps using mpeg4. My machine is a compaq nc8000 laptop with a 1.4 GHz Pentium M processor.

Is this performance normal for my machine? Can I tweak something so that I can capture larger areas of the screen?

can I assume you have read, understood, and
tried everything written in this FAQ entry?

Yes, I've read the FAQ entry but nothing helps short of making the capture area really small. I'm getting around 1-2 fps when trying to capture 10 fps (mpeg4) @ 1024x768. Can the video drivers effect capture performance? I'm using the xorg 6.7 radeon driver. Apparently others have been able to capture full screen video with xvidcap as I've seen some pretty nice looking videos.
