/dev/dsp doesn't exist in Ubuntu 10.04 so the microphone doesn't record.
It seems there are very few people in the Ubuntu community whom understands how the microphone/speakers (/dev/snd) works as I see a lot of unanswered threads where people have asked about this topic.
Has anybody dealt with this problem yet? I have seen where people seemed to get xvidcap working in ubuntu using pavucontrol, but it is a lengthy and awkward process that has to be repeated every time the computer is rebooted. I don't see that as a solution, but a hassle.
If this doesn't work, I'll have to buy Camtasia for Windows, which I really don't want to do. (the competing open source projects are also broken in their own very special ways, actually more broken. This tool is the best one I have seen.)
