I'm baffled by codec chaos. Thanks to xvidcap I can generate and view videos created with more different video/audio formats than I ever dreamed of. But this same flexibility is also a bit of a nightmare, because nothing I create seems to be viewable by OS X or MSWin users with "plain vanilla" versions of their own os's players. So what preferences settings--especially audio--are necessary to capture videos that can be played by quicktime and/or wmp? Best if the output is something that OS X and MSWin users can see and hear without having to download codecs from some third party site . . .

For QT compatibility, I'd suggest trying MOV format with sorenson codec.
