Hi Bill, I did actually look at your directory listing, and it looked allright, i.e. the files are in the right locations. I do not understand why the installer would not install /opt, and i do not understand how the executable could run at all without the libraries found under /opt. Right now I'm trying to build gtk without x11, so my setup is a bit of a mess, but I hope I'll get around to trying to reproduce your situation over the holiday. Sorry that it doesn't seem to work; unfortunately I haven't got any feedback from anybody else. happy Thanksgiving, Stefan |

Not had a chance to try this yet, but will do soon Thanks for your efforts. If you'll look back at the emails I sent on 11/21 it describes the situation after installation. Briefly, I can't get the install to work when I attempt it from my "normal" admin-enabled login. I must install it from my "original" login set up when I originally received the MacBook. The user-name is "William Brown" and the files installed by the xtrkcad installer are shown as being owned by "root." This is shown by the partial directory listing I sent Friday (11-21) evening. Note that the param files are in a sub-directory of the xtrkcad folder in Applications. When I attempt to start xtrkcad in my "normal" login I get the error messages which I'm enclosing below. Note that these are only the first four - it goes on for a long time. Again - note that the params files do not install in Users/williambrown/Documents/XtrkCAD/ but are in Applications/Xtrkcad/share Again I refer you to the directory listing mentioned above, and repeat; no /opt folder exists on my machine. The installer did not create and/or populate it. And xtrkcad does not seem to be looking for it. I hope this helps. >Hi Bill, > >So, when it fails as a normal user, how does it fail? Hi Bill, So, when it fails as a normal user, how does it fail? I'm asking because it could have different reasons: a) a library is missing; it would say something like 'can't find file /opt/local/somewhere/gtk_blabla.2.0.somenumber.dylib' b) it can't find any of its setup files in /Applications/xtrkcad/share/xtrkcad/: there would be a message to that regard, the pop-up 'tip of the day' window would show a complaint, things like that; c) it starts up, displays the 'tip of the day' window, but then complains for every single .xtp file. I don't think (but hey, I could be wrong) there is a case where it would want to touch anything in the user directory of the user that installed it. In case a) something went wrong with installing libraries under /opt/local; in b) there is something wrong with the environment variable XTRKCADLIB (like, it exists and points somewhere wrong), and in c) it probably found a working directory under your user account (~/.xtrkcad) with an xtrkcad.rc file that has pointers for a different install saved. If it's a), the install has to be repeated. b), simply remove that variable, and c), if you don't want to blow away your xtrkcad.rc file, you have to click 'ok' for every single .xtp file complaint until its done complaining. Then it should work, but you have to tell it where the parameter files are. Please let me know if one of these helps. cheers, Stefan PS: It's my understanding that logging in as 'root' is really not necessary under OS X, and is actually deprecated, and disabled by default. In any case, the install of either of the OS X xtrkcad packages does not require you to be logged in as root; it does require a privileged user account though (your normal user account that can do administrative tasks). |

Like the other version I installed it as root. I can use it as root, but cannot get it to run under my "normal" login. No surprise there, I think. It seems to think that every user is root, which the OS doesn't agree with. It looks for files in my root user directory, which it isn't allowed to see or touch, apparently. I'll try to give it a "go" on the ibook tomorrow and report back. It should be interesting if it runs. The older version of OS-X doesn't seem to have as strong a feeling of file ownership IRC. We'll see. -- --+---+ \/ -bill ++---+ |[]]|_^_[] gearedloco2001@... _|____+-+___|____|_ Modesto, CA | o+o +-+ ()--()-= \ Amazing Grace - C-250 #302 |

I'll be happy to blow away what I have and download the other binary if you (re)tell me where to get it. Assuming there is a universal binary. If not, I can try the powerPC binary on my iBook which I think is running the latest version of 10.3 - 10.3.11 IIRC. It's an 800 Mhz machine, so that's the last upgrade that Apple recommends. I retired from LBNL (aka lrl, lbl, etc) at the end of 2001 after 33 years. The project I worked on for the last several years was the Advanced Light Source control system. For the most part, I was the grunt they kept chained in a dark corner who did device drivers and other relatively low level bits close to the hardware. I really enjoyed the work for the most part and retired because of the commute from Concord to Berzerkley. The fact that retiring a little early really didn't change my pension by much was also a consideration. > >PPS: switching between the two xtrkcad installations makes the program >lose all the param files => lots of pop-up complaints. Hi Bill, This sounds like it is the 410b1 Intel only install, not the PowerPC 401. For some reason I thought you wanted the PowerPC binary? If it's the 410b1 intel, then it would go indeed into /Applications/ xtrkcad, but a few libraries should also go into /opt/local, regardless of whether you had that directory before or not. It (the package installer) shouldn't really give you any choice, and it should work whether you had some (or a lot) of macports installed or not. Cheers, Stefan PS: so you are or were at the Rad Lab? I've only been there once; I got stranded at Fermilab... PPS: switching between the two xtrkcad installations makes the program lose all the param files => lots of pop-up complaints. Once you get through those, it works. On Nov 22, 2008, at 12:38 AM, Bill Brown <gearedloco2001@...> wrote: >> Hi Bill, >> >> Thanks for the feedback. Hi Bill, Thanks for the feedback. That's disconcerting that the install only works for one user. It's supposed to ask for your password and then install into /opt, which should be readable by anyone. User-specific files should then be created at first startup in each users' directory. I'll have another look at file protections etc. on my machine. I had really hoped that the package install process wouldn't leave any options for variations and things to go wrong.... Dear Bill and Matt, could you please try the PowerPC(+Intel) image I just put into the 4.0.1 release? The dmg file is 23 MB and contains a readme file and an OS X package. The package installs into /opt/local; it needs a total of 66 MB. I think it should just work, but there could always be an issue, for example with that fontsconfig problem. If one needs to run a 'sudo fc-cache' then it would be good to include that in the instructions, before announcing it on the Yahoo list. So, could you please test it? best regards, Stefan PS: It's my understanding that from the user side there's really not that much difference between 4.0.1 and 4.0.2. |

Stefann, yes putting the packages on the Sourceforge download area would be highly welcomed. Regards Martin On 14.11.2008 05:35 Stefan Grünendahl wrote: > Ok, I made it into a dmg. I've noticed this on all platforms, the lines are defaulting to a ridiculous size (20 points, I think), but can be modified to something more sensible. Fixing this would be a good task for someone getting started with the project. > regarding a relocatable package, I got a cmake setup working with a lot > of help from Tim's work (I included all of the bits in an email some > time ago) that is not yet perfect, in that the pango libs must exist > under the /opt/local/lib path, but the rest of /opt/local/ can be > removed. Having multiple competing binaries floating-around benefits no-one. I have taken a slow, deliberate approach to creating a packaging process that's automated and reproducible. If anyone is frustrated with my pace, at least work within the build process so your efforts aren't wasted. See http://www.cmake.org/Wiki/CMake:CPackPackageGenerators#Bundle_.28OSX_only.29 for instructions on how to use the bundle generator in CMake. Cheers, Tim |

Dear all, I have staged two xtrkcad OS X packages in https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=244231&package_id=297721 4.1.0b1 is for intel only, created from the CVS head version as of a few weeks ago, 4.0.1 is merely a repackaging of Derrick's universal (i86 + ppc) tar file (modulo inclusion of a fonts subdir and of the 4.0.2 parameter files). I hope that somebody will find time to test them, and that the group admins will then include them in the official download area (or give me permission to do so). best regards, Stefan |

Hi Gents, in reply to a couple of issues Stefan has raised, I would like to add my 2 bob's worth.... regarding macports - I tried quite a number of variations to get a good macports install (not just for Xtrkcad), and ended up doing a step-by-step install to resolve all dependencies and get a sweet result (for Leopard 10.5.3 at the time). The order I used was pkgconfig, glib2, fontconfig, cairo, xft2, pango, gtk2, gail, libgtkhtml then cmake. The biggest differences in results seemed to stem from installing pkgconfig first, and xft2 before pango. regarding a relocatable package, I got a cmake setup working with a lot of help from Tim's work (I included all of the bits in an email some time ago) that is not yet perfect, in that the pango libs must exist under the /opt/local/lib path, but the rest of /opt/local/ can be removed. I haven't got back to working on the pango issue yet, but I think it might be in a .plist that macports installs somewhere (pango seems to ignore any environment settings). I still have a problem with printing table edges from my build, does anyone else with an osx build get big fat lines for table edges ? Structures, track etc. all print fine. Ok, I made it into a dmg. I tried to make it relocatable, but the xtrkcadd executable really expects the libraries in /opt/local/lib, so /opt is where it goes. The next step should be for somebody with a PowerPC to test it. Martin and/or Jonathan, would it be ok to stage it here (xtrkcad-fork)? cheers, Stefan |

Another update: on my lunch break I found Derrick J Brashear's 4.0.1 tar file with on OS X universal binary. (see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/XTrkCad/message/2412 ) After adding a /opt/local/fonts/fonts.conf file it seems it works. All I can check is the intel part, of course. (Or is there a way to force a Rosetta execution under 10.4.11?) Is there any reason why this was never packaged and added to the 4.0.1 release? If nobody objects, then I'd propose to make it into a dmg and add it, so that the PPC people that are not so much into compiling and linking have at least something. The .xtc files seem to be backward compatible between 4.1.0b1 and 4.0.1 . Bill, you are actually part of that yahoo group email exchange with Derrick. From the old emails I glean that there are some reservations installing stuff into /opt. Why? It's not part of OS X per se, but rather some macports special location (just like /sw is the Fink special directory). So far I've had no qualms trashing (or rather, moving aside and then remaking anew) my /opt tree, and my macbook is still working... Should one try to group all the libraries and files needed for xtrkcad into its /Application subdirectory? I was working under the assumption that anybody who would install from the .dmg would not have a full-blown macports environment, and thus not care about /opt. (Of course I was careful to specify in the notes accompanying the intel 4.1.0b1 image which directories things get written to.) I would really appreciate others' comments and opinions on this. cheers, Stefan cc: Derrick on yahoo |

It seems those among us who haven't succeeded at building xtrkcad yet are more motivated to help with the PPC build than those who have a working version... go figure :-) Seriously, if I understand it correctly, Tim made the OS X port on a G4 PPC about a year ago, so it ought to work just following his 'cmakebuild' page on the wiki. (Please correct me if I'm attributing things wrongly here.) Matt mentioned (off-list) that he gets stuck already at the GTK2 install step under macports. Question (to Tim): is there anything besides installing from the macports dmg, then doing a 'sudo port selfupdate' and the three 'sudo port install GTK2/libgtkhtml/gnome-icon-theme' that needs to be done on a PPC? BTW, if I remember correctly, I had to repeat the install command for at least one of the three packages on my intel mac; there seems to be some order or self-dependency problem. But the second time the install would finish successfully. Since I am already asking questions of Tim: Tim, you integrated a packagebuilder (which I haven't tried yet). Will that produce one self-contained executable, or does one still end up with a main executable and several dylibs? Is there a way to force the linker to make one single static (if that's the right word) image? This is probably a really basic question, but I don't know the answer in the macports/cmake environment of xtrkcad. To make my copy of the intel OS X package I just used the packagebuilder that comes with Xcode, which is probably the most inelegant of all possible ways. (It seems cmake also has a 'dmg' option that should create a disk image of an OS X package.) Has anybody tried one of the other options? Ok, enough questions for now... cheers, Stefan |

There'll be quite a learning curve associated with my trying to do a build. I haven't even got macports installed on either of my systems. The iBook runs 5.3.11 - that's about as good as it gets on that CPU. Right now my DSL is down (I'm using a neighbors router/DSL 'cause she doesn't have it locked down!) and I'm not having a lot of luck getting AT&T to fix it. I've spent 2 hours on "hold" this evening and have made zero progress. So downloading a lot of big files is out for the time being. -- --+---+ \/ -bill ++---+ |[]]|_^_[] gearedloco2001@... _|____+-+___|____|_ Modesto, CA | o+o +-+ ()--()-= \ Amazing Grace - C-250 #302 |

I've tried compiling on PPC, but hot similar/same errors. So, I'd be happy to do it bug would need detailed instruction. Dear Developers, This is a question about compiling XTrkCAD under OS X for the PowerPC: Does anybody know how to cross-compile under OS X using macports libraries, specifically with the xtrkcad prerequisites GTK2, libgtkhtml and gnome-icon-theme? I have an Intel Mac, but I would like to build a universal image, or even just a PowerPC executable. (Building the intel binary worked fine.) I have tried installing with the '+universal' switch (e.g. sudo port install GTK2 +universe), but building xtrkcad always fails with complaints about architecture mismatches in a bunch of dylibs. For example: Linking C executable xtrkcad /usr/bin/ld: warning /opt/local/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.dylib cputype (7, architecture i386) does not match cputype (18) for specified -arch flag: ppc (file not loaded) (Actually, now that I completely uninstalled macports, the install of GTK2 +universal fails with an error: configure: WARNING: *** TIFF loader will not be built (TIFF library not found) *** configure: error: *** Checks for TIFF loader failed. You can build without it by passing *** --without-libtiff to configure but some programs using GTK+ may *** not work properly So maybe I didn't actually succeed in installing the universal variant before.) Any hints/pointers/manuals would be appreciated. Alternatively, is there a way to get hold of prebuilt dylibs for PPC? Unfortunately it seems a whole bunch of them are needed... If it turns out that cross-compiling is not possible, then somebody else who actually has a PowerPC Mac will need to build the PPC binary + libs. cheers, Stefan |
