From the initial xsas screen, anything I try gives "HTTP 500 - Internal server error
    Internet Explorer"

This duplicates the problem I had with Apache before running xsas, and what i was trying to get away from.  The msg apache gave when i tried to start was: "VirtualHost overlap on port 3339" and http://localhost gave the 500 error.

I removed apache from my %PATH% and %CLASSPATH% but didn't reboot.

Maybe it was the way i didn't install xsas -- i just followed the instructions and ran the file xsas.exe.  I certainly don't see how you can get a full-blown apache, php and mysql environment from just that.  However i do have a W drive, altho that's a little strange in that it says E(W:) in the explorer and i already have an E drive which says E(E:).

Thanks for reading this far and
    hope you can help,
    Peter.

I've made progress but still have HTTP 500 on localhost.

I stopped the old Apache after clearing up the port conflict with OEM.
Now when i start XSAS it starts up a new apache in w:\usr\local\apache2\bin\Apache.exe

The ErrorLog is w:/tmp/error.log and contains:
[Tue Jul 13 19:40:46 2004] [notice] Parent: Created child process 1788
[Tue Jul 13 19:40:47 2004] [notice] Child 1788: Child process is running
[Tue Jul 13 19:40:47 2004] [notice] Child 1788: Acquired the start mutex.
      [Tue Jul 13 19:40:47 2004] [notice] Child 1788: Starting 250 worker threads.

      The access.log is empty.

      Hope you can help,
      Peter.

      UPDATE

      Running xsas.exe creates
      1 Application called XSAS
      2 Processes called XSAS.exe and
      2 Processes called Apache.exe

Ending the Application ends the Processes.

The problem might be that I don't have TCP/IP enabled.

      To quote the start-up docs:
          "To enable Apache server:
          - switch on TCP/IP network protocol (if you have no network card just install something)."

My Computer Mgmt shows no network conns info but i have a cable modem installed which seems to use TCP/IP.

If I do need to switch on TCP/IP, what does "just install something" mean?

      FYI
It was a microsoft problem with their default browser options.

I got the answer via the Internet Chess Club!
