What xRealm project is?

xRealm is browser based MMO space (s-f) strategy game, based on XXXX principle (eXpand, eXtract, eXplore, eXterminate), where typical but various examples of titles that match some of these description are: Ogame, Masters of Orion, Stars!, Dark Orbit, Eve Online, Ufo / XCOM and many similar one. Some of the ideas from these games strongly influenced our design. It was inevitable as we played all these titles.

First true design steps have been taken in early 2008 where we (LO, Grooby and Ashen) created first rules, divided our ideas into 3 main releases, designed some business rules for the whole project and defined some details of the gameplay.

It was quite astonishing, when we found some of these ideas announced few months later (just to name PS3' "Dust 514" game idea...) in some titles...

But to the point.

Game Overview

Game is designed for two different game modes - Endless Game and Scenario Mode. While Endless Game is like typical Ogame instance, where player just grows stronger, and expands (or loses) his empire on the ruins of other players. This is particularly difficult for new players to join such games - they have almost no chance to get to the top players, or win anything with very strong (or even stronger) players. Therefore our game design includes endgame content reserved for power players, that would separate them from lower level players, but give them substantial challenges in this part of the game. Anyway - this endgame content is planned for release 2.0, so it's still a bit of secret.
That's why Scenario Mode has been designed. In this mode players can join a scenario based game (we had already designed two scenarios - "Enemy of the Universe" and "Alien at the Gates") which are designed to take up around 3 months of time. After game ends - there are awarded medals, achievements and other prizes and scenario is being restarted, with rules specific to the scenario. There is idea (if there is enough players of course) to have one scenario game started each two weeks, so there is always something to jump in for a new players. We do think about starting a poll regarding scenario selection one week before it starts, and joining players can decide what that would be. Details of the scenarios are part of the closed discussion (to avoid leaking spoilers to the public) and are only available to the design team.

Game Play

As for version 1.0 there are following game principles designed: (in italic are these that are not confirmed)

  • Whole universe is being split by solar systems, each containing several planets (6+), planetoids and other space objects. Planned layout of the solar systems is linear, what would be easier to calculate routes and
  • There will be up to 5 players that start the game in the same system - each on separate planet that has perfect environment for his race to growth. The players will be added to the system in linear manner, resulting with players representing similar game "age" to be close to each other and linear placement of solar systems wil add to it.
  • All players expand their colonies by adding new buildings, upgrading existing ones, hiring / breeding more colonists, discovering sorrounding area in search for gatherable resources; food production, energy production and finally by increase in technology and warfare.
  • It's possible to send your spaceships between nearby solar systems, but this takes a lot of time and lots of fuel. You better find some wormhole that can led you to unknow space or better buil dfully controlable space gate!
  • Yes - fleets. You can investigate, discover and design various space ships hulls, mount various components on them and use to: mine planetoids or gas planets, attack othe rplanets, terraform them colonize or just buy and sell prodcuts, resources or colonists from other player and sell them to another! And make money for even bigger fleet!

(...) And many, many more. But this is our trade secret :)
